General question about mpeg converison in FCP
January 11, 2007 09:22AM
I was reading a tutorial on this site called

Final Cut Pro 4 to MPEG 2
(Without Compressor) & Basic AIFF to AC3

and in the body of the article it mentions that
it sends out a .mv2 file for video and a .aiff file for
audio.

I am interested in converting some vhs tapes to
PC mpeg; but is it not convention to have the
audio and video interleaved together in one file
(ala PC's bbmpeg, TMpeg; etc)

As we are giving the client a data DVD with all the
mpeg files; I was wondering if there was a way of
generating an interleaved version of the mpeg output;
as described in the article.

Thanks very much

it seems the mv2 file has the audio file included!
cool.

Before there was Compressor was QuickTme with the MPEG-2 plugin. It does output one.m2v and one .aiff file that can be put onto a DVD.

.m2v file is video only.

Lots of different MPEG2 variations.

The fully integrated file is called a System Stream or Program Stream. I don't know any way to make one of those in Final Cut or Compressor. That's where you need TMPGEnc or one of the other programs for the PC. The Mac programs all produce Elemental Streams which carry picture on one file and sound on the other.

You can totally have more than one sound. The DVD specification allows you to put a straight PCM stereo audio track **and** an AC3 5.1 surround track in the same show.

They warn you with a red message in TMPGEnc that if you do produce a System Stream, most people will not be able to play it.

Transport Stream differs from System Stream in that it has extra stuff in the file to make it harder to break.
