From Avid to FCP

New to LAFCPUG
Long time Avid user.
Avid proved strong on version 5 and up. Now FCP has my atttention.
Experienced all FCP versions from v1 to v4. Saw FCP master tapes with white frames
and audio sync issues. Now... FCP Studio has it all going on.
Sound Track Pro vs. ProTools, no contest for Round-tripping direct from the timeline.
Motion vs. After Effecs, Motion wins hands down for ease of use and built ins.
Training is fluent and a plenty. Lynda.com is a lifeline.

So... you know all this. But... it was very difficult to see the benefits.

Cost... ease of use and back to my beloved OS.
BTW, the new P2 import rocks.
24P is a breeze.

Rarely do anyone see the benefits unless they use the app and especially use it right. Requires a bit of reading and especially a bit of doing.

I'm always having conversations with people which go "Oh, FCP is no good because it can't do this.." To which I usually reply 'Sure it can, you just do this.."

After a couple of goes at this, they either get interested and decide to investigate further for themselves, or decide that FCP is crap because .. 'it just is, OK?!?!'

White frames? What's that about?

Welcome back to the OS, Chris. smiling smiley

"conversations with people which go "Oh, FCP is no good because it can't do this..""
really Jude, still?
that's amazing. i would have thought that after all this time the clouds of FUD would have evaporated.

so chris, if you have any thing you;re still unsure about, ask away
(never seen those white frames myself.)

very wise words from Michael

cheers,

For example..."Match Frame doesn't work."

"I can't hear audio when logging and capturing."

"My effects look like crap after rendering."

"Why can't FCP organize my media for me?"

Yeah - all the time. Here's one from this week.

"FCP isn't as good as Avid because you can't just add a cross dissolve with one keystroke."

"Uh, Apple T?"

"That's two keystrokes."

I guess the guy didn't feel that having to hit the return button in Avid constituted a keystroke.

"Motion vs. After Effecs, Motion wins hands down for ease of use and built ins. "

-Sure it does. And iDVD beats DVD studio pro cause its so easy to use.....
No seriously. Motion is amateur compared to After Effects.

Not to nitpick but that is TWO keystrokes. APPLE and T.

OK...to nitpick.

Yeah that's what he said. But you have to press return on Avid, so that's two keystrokes too. smiling smiley

Mind you, you could make it a button on FCP if you really didn't want to lift that other finger...

As a matter of fact, I did map it to a button, because I am just that lazy.

Interestingly enough, I mapped it to the same button that option is available on an Avid. Because I am that much of a creature of habit, and Avid was my habit for 8 years.

Not that I need my fix or anything.

Does Final Cut have an equivalent to Avid's Lift. I'm new to FCP and this is something that i'm really missing.
Is there a way to mark in and out and lift a portion of a sequence or the only way to do it is to make cuts and then delete?
Thanks in advance, and sorry if this is just a silly question.

There is a "Lift" function; I don't know if it has a shortcut. Press OPTION-H and look up Lift.

Press the Delete key. The big one next to =. Not the forward delete key, which is ripple delete.
