I think i'm in trouble oops

hey guys,

I have this footage shot on both the DVX and the Varicam. The DVX is 720x480. (i think this footage was shot 24p, but I don't believe i did the advance pulldown during capture). So it is in the system at 29.97. But I do not even know if there was even an advanced pulldown done in camera.

The Varicam is is 960x780 24p (DVCPRO HD 720p60)

I have mixed frame rates. What is the best way to get this footage to 23.98?

I need to get this footage to an editable medium.

The Final output is going to be 29.97 SD, but we would like to be able to at least on-line the HD footage later for a master.

any suggestions?

thanks,
J

Well, you are going to have to upconvert the DV footage. Best thing to do is to just edit the show with both formats captured natively...resizing and rendering the DV footage as you cut it in. Then, when you are done, throw all the DV footage on its own video layer and export an EDL...or copy and paste them into a DV timeline and REMOVE ATTRIBUTES to get them back to normal. String them together, output them to tape, and take them to a post facility to have them dub to DVCPRO HD using a Terranex Box to upconvert and convert 29.97 to 23.98.

We did this with the last show I worked on and it all came out looking great.

Thanks Shane,

However, this is for a feature length doc, and all the rendering clip for clip, is going to eat a lot of time.

What is the best way to get the DVX (29.97) footage to 23.98? I'm about 90% sure this was shot with the intention of being 23.98. Is there a way to do the advanced pulldown after capture?

thanks again,
J

The doc I worked on was feature length...95 min. Resizing and rendering goes much faster than you think.

Best way? I told you...Terranex. But to do that with ALL the footage is a waste of money. Another way? Get a Kona 3 card and rent a DV deck with SDI out and use the Kona to upconvert the footage to DVCPRO HD. Again...spendy. But, if you are in the market for a Kona card anyway.

Another way? Compressor. But that will take TIME...serious time. 40 min for a 20 second clip time.

Right now I have a Kona 2 and a DV deck with SDI.

that should work, right?

ugh, thats so much footage to recapture.

what should the capture settings be.

Kona2 DVCPRO HD 720p60? (that will match my Varicam)

thanks again

Assuming that the above reply will work

Instead of re-loging all of my footage, I can make those clips offline and and re-batch capture the tapes through the Kona2 card, since they are logged by reels(tapes).

That should save time, no?

Let me know what you think.

That'll work. Depending on how much drive space you have. This is why I saved it all until the end. We had A LOT.

Kona 2 should work...and at the settings you said.

Thanks Shane...

Drive space shouldn't be a problem, hell you can get the 500 SATA's for $160+- now.

Why are you trying to go to 23.98?
Your final product is 29.97, you already got there why f&%$k with it more.
DVCPro 720/60 is a great format for editing and delivery.
I have never had somebody network or dub house kick something
back for not being good enough at 720/60.
The DV footage must be resized or uprezzed not sure which is better.
But you can see pulldown in your shots. Does it have a flickering frame?
Does it flicker after two or three frames? then it has pulldown.
SD downconvert from your Kona card and be done with it.
Just my 2 cents
JC

I believe the only way to adjust pulldown after capture is C Tools.
It's really a pain in the backside. I watch others deal with it with only marginal results.
