fcp shortcuts on macbook pro

Just bought a macbook pro,
I mostly edit on my G4, I enjoy useing the short cuts keys to edit.
On the macbook pro (when using FCP) the f9 and f10 insert and overwrite don't respond (other do). They actually respond as if FCP is not even open, f10 being screen brightness?
The default shortcuts are all set correctly?
Any ideas?

You need to change a preference:

System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard

Check "Use the F1-F12 keys to control software features"

The volume and screen brightness etc can now be accessed by holding the Fn key down.
