Wacked QT Conversion

HI All

I just upgraded a few weeks ago and now when I do
QT Conversions Mpeg4 H264 for for use on the web site
The first 2 to 3 seconds of each clip is Really Wacked out--

Very pictsulated into about 3 large blocks-
gray to white in color - No ledgiable picture
can be seen

after about 3 seconds the picture clears
and looks pretty good -rest of clip--

No dissolves or effects -just still graphics at begaining of clip

The QTC looks good when previewed
on my mac-

But after up loaded to net is when the problems
happen-- Net play back look bad first
2 to 3 seconds

Anyone else having this problem?

Have the still graphics been optimised for FCP? Are they RGB, or CMYK or greyscale?

Hi Jude--

All the video was edited and titles created in FCP-

The videos are real basic - titles then show is one clip straight threw--
talking head type stuff -short 3 to 5 min.

I have done many QT conversions for the web
and never had any problem till I started using the H264 option-


I have looked on apple K base and have not found
any info that matches what is happening--

The media I was using is on a OWC 800 firewire drive that is half empty
and other drives are empty ect -- no other FW devices connected -

The drive keeps up with much more complex timelines no problem-

I have tried several setting and many kbs settings from
275 Kbs up and still No Love --

I am doing the QT conversion directly from a fully rendered
timeline like I usually do -- Maybe there is a problem
doing the H264 conversion from the timeline?

The real wacky part is that it only dose this on about 75%
of shows and only at the very first 3 seconds

Export a full-quality, self-contained QuickTime movie first. Check that and see if the same problem is there. If so, move your edits to a new timeline with identical settings and try again. If the problem isn't on the full-quality file, then use that as the basis for the H.264 export.

I agree with Derek, as far as a workflow test. It will help you get to the root of the problem. I just wanted to add that I vaugely remember that you've been having some other problem with your system, haven't you? What was that? Could it be related? Maybe quicktime prefs are corrupt or something?

I will try to make conversion from completed QT movie and
see what happens--

My system has been running perfect until OS - FCP and Qt upgrade
2 weeks ago-- now I have wacky fan operation--

Ps sorry about the Line threw my first post (strike threw) --Ouch I wrote at 4 am-

This looks a lot more serious than just compression artifacts. Could some of your QuickTime components have been corrupted when you did the upgrade? The whole clip looks unusable to me, not just the first three seconds.

Hey Derek

I up graded 2 weeks ago to FCP 5.1.4-- QT 7.15- OS 10.4.9

Yep this clip was Really Bad -- it had the Highest data rate
that I have tried and it was toast--

I tried putting 3 seconds of black at the begaining of the timeline-
the black looks a solid Gray and clears when the show starts--
rest of show looks good --

The play back of the QT conversion looks perfect with in
my computer --

The Glitch shows up on playback thru YouTube
and another sites ---

I am starting to think that the H 264 dose not mix well with
the Flash conversion that the Video sites use???

Well, diagnostic tests. Try exporting the first half of the show and the second half separately, same codec and settings as the bad clip. Put both halves through the exact same process and see if the end clips are the same. If both clips have the "opening three seconds" problem, then there's probably something conflicting between the process and your chosen settings. If only the first half has problems, then there's something embedded in your clips that's causing you grief. If the results are inconsistent or very different, try another codec.

Troubleshooting is all about narrowing down your suspects by trying to recreate the problem while shifting one element at a time.

Well I spent the last day or so testing to find out what is causing
my problems--I think it is different Video sites can handle H264
and some cant-- I will start a new thread and give the results

Hi there.... I tried a search for this answer but didn't really have luck. It's somewhat related to this thread: What format (I'm assuming mpeg4) is the best to upload to YouTube? And what settings work the best for a 4 minute music video. So far my 'compressings' look pretty bad. Any guidance would be appreciated.
