Noo - it's just landed here in Oz. Around AU$6k will buy you a nice little unit. Ships in 2 to 4 days, according to the site.

I'll be on my mate's Applestore doorstop tommorow.

Aww dammit - they just pulled the prices out of the Aus Apple store. This is getting really annoying. Just sell us the bloody thing. We know you've got them!

Hmmmm! US price $3997.00 for 8 core 3.0 Ghz with 250 GB drive.

Displays have dropped slightly to $599, $899 and $1799 but still NO BluRay or HD-DVD drive.

I was kind of thinking Apple might have an HDMI input and output on these machines and also new displays with HDMI Guess Not.

Man, lot of money for these things. No HDMI, BluRay, HD Drive. These things better scream for the extra hundreds you got to shell out. I'd wait for performance tests

Is the code-name for this Mac "Octopus"???

The new Ad for Apple could be:

"Get your new Octopus with Leopard inside."

While I was working today I thought Hey maybe this is just the upgrade for Photoshop users and another machine for editors will be announced at NAB. Wishful thinking HUH?
Really all it needs is those BTO options.
Anyone want to carpool from Orange County to Vegas for NAB?

Congrats Jude - I'd be shopping now too knowing how long you've waited!

Interesting. Last night I priced a 2.66 octo, and in the morning there were only 3.0 octos. Apple swears it must have been a webmaster incident.

Good luck with the bank loan you'll need Jude! At $6.5k I'd certainly be waiting for real world tests (I know, more waiting!)

Yeah - and I've added bluetooth, wireless gear, the ATI card and some extra RAM, so it's more like $7.5K. Benchmarks, anyone? Or .. even.. reassurance that it won't be the P76 version G5?

Uh, that's an Aussie car joke, for those who go googling P76.

hahahahaha - aussie.

Still, I don't reckon I'd jump quite so early. Have the prices of the quad/duo's come down? Would you be better off aiming lower and going duo/quad in the medium term?

I think field tests will be important - just another couple of weeks and we will know more I think.

Or (and I really, really really hate to say this) but is there a physical revision of these machines 6 months away? (Sorry Jude!)

Right, really going to bed now!

J.

Tsk. I'm going to go to my grave waiting for a new machine here.

It's the most sensible thing to do, sadly.

I'm not waiting six months though. There will always be a new version on the horizon. Gotta jump sometime.

Now, quickly, someone else jump for me and tell me if there's rocks or marshmallows at the bottom!

You know, these 3 Ghz 4 cores are the only ones being sold by Intel ATM. You can't get Intel chips like that at that speed outside Apple yet. Special thing with Intel.
