Missing Firewire Device

Just upgraded my OS to 10.4.9 (from 10.3) -- and upgraded to FCP 5.1.4 from 4.5

This on a G5 dual 2.0

All went well, but when I just fired up FCP I keep getting the message saying it's unable to locate my external firewire device (in this case, a DSR11 DV deck, and therefore can't control the deck, and I can't capture.

Nothing else has changed other than the software upgrades. Everything was working fine just prior to the upgrades. Need to capture hours worth of footage for a new project and can't figure out what's going on. I unplugged/replugged power and firewire cords, but nada.

Any ideas?
