23.98 ntsc to 29.97 ntscPosted by Yordi
Ok I have a 23.98 sequence, when I playback FCP does an "on-the-fly" pulldown to 29.97 so I can see it on my TV. And it looks great. How can I convert a 23.98 clip to 29.97 without having to go to tape? What I have been doing is (if I want a 29.97 version of a 23.98 clip), I print to tape, then re-capture the clip. This way I have the smooth "on-the-fly" pulldown, but I want to avoid uploading and downloading through firewire. Any suggestions?
Export a self contained QT movie. Reimport. Drop into a 29.97 sequence...render.

Actually, we're struggling with this right now. Doesn't that give you 5:4 pulldown and odd rough motion instead of the very much smoother 3:2? We're fooling with JES-Deinterlacer which is supposed to be able to do this, but it's part of another tool and we can't figure it out yet. Yes, exporting to tape and pulling it back in does appear to be the prevailing bulletproof way to do this--odd as that may sound. Koz
Hey, what do I know? I've never done this. If I need a 29.97 master, I edit 29.97...I don't go to 23.98. Typically I edit 23.98 and deliver 23.98.
The tape output and input sounds like the best route. www.shanerosseditor.com Listen to THE EDIT BAY Podcast on iTunes [itunes.apple.com]
Standards Conversion plugin: [www.nattress.com] will add correct 3:2 pulldown as a render process.

Oh, right. I forgot about you. We're so used to pulling you out for good PAL conversions. Our specific current problem is that the original is 640x480, not 720x480/486, so we would have to either convert and then convert back, or try and create a non-standard timeline. Which is why I really didn't want to do it in Final Cut. None of this is ever easy...... Koz
