Files going off line

Hi All

I am having some wacky things going on with some of my files--

I started FCP and had my external OWC 800 firewire drive shut off-
FCP finished loading and many of my files wear off line-

I shut down FCP turned on the FW drive and restarted FCP-

Now a bunch of files show up in the browser as being Off Line-
But if I click on the Offline files they- the off Line red thumbnail goes away
for most of the clips thumbnails come back in the browser and the Offline red thumbnail
goes away--
If I click in the Browser Not on a thumbnail area the clips show that they are
offline again--

The clips are in the browser and will showup and play in the viewer --

I ran Disk Warrior and repaired disk permissions for all of my drives-
Disk Warrior said the 4 files needed to be fixed and fixed them-
Disk Utilities permission said everything was OK -

I used Media manager on the offline files and reconnected the files -
it made no difference --

All the files will play in the viewer and Timeline--
but they still have the red offline thumbnail -

Most of the files Do not have the Red line threw the thumbnail-

I have not Trashed the FCP user preferences yet and dont want to
unless I have to--

I am stumped-- Help --Jay--

You ran Media Manager? I don't think that was a good idea -- Media Manager has been known to misfire when used on offline media. In my view, the correct diagnostic procedure in this case should have been:

1. Dump Thumbnail Cache. Restart FCP and open the project file to check.
2. Reconnect Media if necessary.
3. If Reconnect goes wrong, check the drive location and see if clips are intact. Open some with QuickTime Player and check.
4. If clips appear intact, open the last archived project file and see if media connection is intact there.
5. Run Disk First Aid and DiskWarrior on the drive to make sure no damage to the directory occurred (#1 problem that arises from involuntary/improper drive dismounts).

Media Manager should never have come into play. It solves nothing and can introduce further wrinkles. You say you are reluctant to dump preferences, but that is a far less disruptive step than Media Manager.

I suspect you may also have made the mistake of saving your project file after opening it with the drive off. When you have an accidental media disconnect, you should never save your project file. If you had closed it without saving, remounted the drive successfully and then opened up the project file again, media connections should have been intact.

I could be wrong, but the original issue looked like a simple case of either corrupt preferences or Thumbnail Cache going wobbly.
