Is it normal for dropped frames with this configuration?

Out of the bat; I am running Tiger OS X 10.4.10
with Quicktime 7.2
Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD

The timeline is set to 10 bit uncompressed SD
and this is outputted through an aja io

The drive is a Huge 1.2 TB U320 drive

The problem:

With only one clip on the timeline and a fade frame black up
with a Broadcast Safe filter; the canvas turns green (preview)
Off the head of the movie FCP warns me:

Warning -dropped frames
One or more of the frames were dropped during playback
(then it goes on to how you can attempt to fix it)

It will error out more time on Safe RT than Unlimited RT
but the error will still occur.

I disconnected both external firewire drives for testing
and this makes no difference at all.

Please note the Huge System drive is jornalled and this is the
only thing I have not changed as you can not turn off jornalling
once it is enabled!

Anyhow, if any one has seen this concern; or has suggestions;
please let me know

how is the drive connected?
10bit uncomp may be overkill.

journaling on a media drive isnt a good thing to do either

It is a Power PC Dual 2.5Ghz 2 Gig Ram

The drive is connected out of a UL4D Dual ScSI controller
out to a Huge System 1.2T vault

I did an upgrade to Tiger from Panther and it never had a problem
with uncompressed 10 bit before.

10 bit uncompressed is great for keeping the quality high
(as DV captured through the aja io looks compressed and
looks like diVX with the streaking reds)

As this systems houses a KONA 2 card as well, I want to
get rid of the 10 bit uncompressed dropped frame issue.

I have tried everything listed in the aja FAQ and apple FAQ
bar one; turning off journalling (which a tech from Ciprico
asked me to do; I wish I hadn't)

You can turn off the journaling on the external without reformatiing. Just go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Select the drive, hold down option and then go to File > Disable Journaling.

But - can you do uncompressed 10 bit over firewire? I thought this was too high.

I remember reading that you can do two streams of Uncompressed 10-bit SD over FireWire 800 only. Not FireWire 400. Never tried it myself, though -- at the places where I do broadcast DigiBeta and Uncompressed 10-bit SD, we use SATA RAID.

I think he's using a SCSI drive, though. So it's not relevant.

I agree with Wayne that capturing DV footage using an Uncompressed 10-bit SD codec is overkill. More likely there's something iffy about your AJA DV codec. Did you try the default Apple DV NTSC codec?

The fact is, the dropped-frame warning is often a 'Cry Wolf' kind of thing. I always turn it off, especially for editing (rather than capturing and tape output) because even if 1/100th of a frame is dropped, FCP will stop and whine. When I do tape outputs, I just use my eye -- if there are no visible dropouts, then the dropped-frame warning is not really contributing anything useful.

I have tried and tried this method on the Capture
Scratch drive (Huge System U320 to UL4D dual scsi
controller) and it doesn't work; it allows you to highlight
verify on the RAID drive, but will not let you turn off journaling.
