The unsharp mask filter is more powerful, with its three parameters, than the simple sharpen filter, with its one. However, the sharpen filter sometimes does a nice job. I'm curious whether the sharpen filter is equivalent to the unsharp mask filter with the latter's parameters set in certain ways or whether it works by a different principle.

Is that really important? I have a philosophy...if it looks good, use it. Put both FX on a layer. Alternate them on & off & use the one that looks best. Sometimes a simple Linear Color Key works better than KeyLight in After Effects. I use whatever works best in individual situations.

When life gives you dilemmas...make dilemmanade.
