FCP crashes on Export using QT Conversion

Hi All

I am using FCP 5.1.4 - QT 7.3 Dual 2 gig G5 -2.5 gigs ram 2 internal drives 1 OWC 800 FWD
I have done All of the Apple software updates --

2 minute timeline Has one track of Green screen 5 jpegs pictures
5 tracks text
1 track DV Cam D25 video ( Stock mini DV)
nothing real complected in the timeline

First thing that happened is when I tried to save I get A - File Error Message -
and could Not Save -

Now when I Open Export using QT Conversion--
A few clips in the time line-- UN Render and get the red render bar-

When I close the QT conversion Window the All the Clips in the Timeline
go back to the Rendered State--

As soon as I open the QT Conversion window the clips go to UN rendered state again-

When I try to Export using QT Conversions it will go to about 35% rendered
and FCP Crashes completely--

I have deleted the few clips that UnRendered - dose not help -

I have trashed FCP Preferences - 2 times -

I have Reset Permissions - No errors found -3 times-

I have run Disk Warrior - found No errors -

I have tried Copy and Pasting timeline into New Sequences and new Project

Still No Love

FCP was Smooth till the- File Error Message - when I tried to Save
then things went Wacky Fast

Anyone have Any Idea how to Fix ???

Dose QT Export have Preference files that I can Trash like FCP has ???

Thanks for your Help --Jay--

Jay, I don't know much, but that FILE ERROR MESSAGE usually means bad news.

In the meantime, as a workaround, can you output the sequence using EXPORT>QUICKTIME. Not QT Conversion?

Just use the default CURRENT SETTINGS and successfully output the movie.

Then REIMPORT that QT and drop it into a new sequence.

Then try outputting THAT using conversion and see if it still gives you trouble.

This has been my workaround for problems like this in the past. God luck.

Hi All

I can not export using QT movie or anything else -
I am Stuck-
I have been trying to fix this for 6 solid days and have gotten No where-

Each time I try to export the file gets made into a H264 file
at data rates from 800 k to 1.9 mb per second

Even when using QT movie export -

I have searched the forum and have not found the answer-

Please Please Help --I am stuck --Jay--

Have you re-installed QT Jay? Try exporting as a self contained movie and bringing into Compressor or QT player and doing the conversion?

First I'd try disconnecting and reconnecting media. Backup your project file, then select everything in your timeline and press SHIFT-D, choose "Leave Files on Disk". Now go to File - Reconnect Media.

If that doesn't help, try copying the project file to a different drive location and see if it behaves the same way. If all else fails, try copying all the files necessary (project, media, everything) onto a new drive and access them from there.

File Error is often a sign of corruption -- it can be software (as Mike suggests), file, or drive corruption. Since a new project/Sequence didn't help, it may not be the project file itself, or rather, it wouldn't be just the project file, but a combination of project file and possible corrupt media. Try dumping your render files as well.

You've got a major troubleshooting issue -- I assume you've already performed safety backups, especially of your project file?

Hi Michael

Can you you send me a link to instructions on How to reinstall QT --
I have not been able to find them online so far -
I have not done that before and I dont want to screw it up -

My system is real unstable right now -
I can occasionally get a export to work sommewhat-
Super slow render times stock H264 - 20 seconds- 30 minute render
and the file glitches

Exporting Self contained movie I do get a file of correct data rate ect-
but I Can Not Convert this file

Another symptom that I have noticed is the timeline graphics (type made in FCP)
seems to be Missing its Alpha channel

Some graphics are OK Most are Toast and completely block out other layers-
Wacky -

Thanks for your Help - Jay -

Hi Derek

Thanks for the help -

I will try the things you list - -

I have tried All of the normal Fixes -

My deadline for this project is Toast - Ouch -
So backing up this project is not necessary now-

What would be your suggestion on the Best way
to getting FCP stable again -

Uninstall FCP and start with Clean install ??
something else ??

Derek--Thanks for your Help -- Jay -

Sorry to hear that, Jay.
But you still need to back it up. Backups aren't just for short-term deadlines. They serve a double-edged function. Obviously they protect your work from being lost should your troubleshooting attempts fry a disk or files. But conversely, having backups also frees you up to try more things during troubleshooting. So the backups also help you find a solution, instead of getting frozen up at every turn about messing up your project.

> Uninstall FCP and start with Clean install ??

That often works, but it's a last resort. A complete reinstall can either help you find the solution or destabilize your system even more. It wipes the slate clean, and while that often kills the old problem, it can also give birth to new, completely unexpected ones. Plus it can affect other things on your system that aren't even having problems now.

If you do have time now, I'd say copy your project to a new project file a bit at a time and see if and when that problem pops up. I'm suspecting media corruption.

Hey Michael --

Thanks for Help and Time

I found this earlier before I asked for further help from you

From what I can understand this is only for QT 6 and below -

It says that Later versions MAY have a Uninstaller in the
install software Somewhere I guess is what they mean-
hard to say what they really mean -
Very unclear --

I have not been able to find else on Uninstaller -

Michael -- Thanks- -Jay--
