xml export questions
January 09, 2008 03:37PM
i've never exported to xml in fcp before and have a
question about media. i'm assuming an xml export is
just a text file. is that correct?

the reason i ask is that i do a lot of audio work
and am looking to upgrade my format converter software.
been using edl convert with omf's but fcp hasn't been
able to include volume curves in that process. the
update to edl convert is set to support fcp xml
conversions but since it's not yet available some info
is hard to come by. just thinking ahead here.

if xml export has some sort of option for media
inclusion there shouldn't be any issue. if it doesn't,
however, i'm thinking i'll need to find out from the
edl convert folks how they plan on doing this. in the
meantime i'm trying to run through possible scenarios,
things like running the project through the media
manager first and exporting the xml from the consolidated
project. that should allow for the media to be brought in
on a single drive in a single folder.

any thoughts?

thanks,
BabaG

An XML export is simply a text file. It has no real media, but only references the media.

Sorry I can't answer the questions after that.

I can't comment on EDL Convert but by far the easiest solution is to upgrade to FCP6 which now has support for audio levels in OMF exports.

well that certainly sounds like the ticket. unfortunately, i doubt
i'd be able to convince the client to do so with their project concluding.
picture is locked and their sending me audio as they prepare for
onlining. i doubt they're going to want to upgrade with that going on.
on the other hand, sounds like things that come in in the future will
finally start having volume automation when desired as more and
more will be using v6. thanks for the tip. for this one, though, as well
as for those slow to update, i'll still be looking for a solution to this
kind of workflow.

thanks again,

AFAIK the solution for pre-FCP6 was to buy Automatic Duck's Pro Export FCP plug-in that supports audio levels.

yeah. tried that. didn't work. edl convert reported there were no
tracks in the test file when we knew there were 4 or 6 or whatever
we tried. got the test file directly from wes at automatic duck.
never going to be able to follow that through as to where the issue
lies, whether it's with duck or edl convert. too much layering
undoubtedly, at least for the debugging process. much cleaner to
keep it to one conversion rather than having to use duck AND edl
convert. oh well. guess i just have to wait to hear from the folks at
ssl who are handling edl convert now.
