POLL : Which version of FCP do you use?Posted by Jude Cotter
Well personally I'm using it to try and figure out what percentage of people are still using old systems, and how much we need FAQ stuff and tutorials that include them. Also good for troubleshooting, to see if, for eg, we are all assuming that most people are on 5.x or 6.x when actually a large percentage are still on 4.x or lower.
I think about five in every 100 posters are still on FCP3 or lower!
The poll is interesting, but we're still gonna have to ask for version numbers every thread. Part of the job. And hope that we remember how to do something in FCP1! You guys still remember when Log and Capture and Edit to Tape were in different places? Or when Auto-Select buttons weren't yet in the timeline? www.derekmok.com
I can't and won't speak for other Canadians but I, myself, would say it as little as possible because I won't be CONTAINED or BOXED IN or have my freedoms limited in ANY WAY. Get me to my bunker and shelter, I am going underground. Call me when this stock hiccup that morphs into a meltdown is over and I can come back overground and fight the zombies for a piece of land. ak Sleeplings, AWAKE!
Agh, more banners. You know... less is more.
I use 5.1.4 inhouse and 6.0.1 out of house. For now. - Loren Today's FCP keytip: Instantly find Next/Previous timeline Gaps with Shift/Option -G ! Final Cut Studio 2 KeyGuide? Power Pack. Now available at KeyGuide Central. www.neotrondesign.com
My guess is that the ones who are still on very low versions are directors, producers etc. who don't work on editing day-in day-out. And so they also don't hit the forum until they need help, and when they do, they might not care enough to participate in the poll. We editors are the nerds!

I run post-production for a company that does a lot of corporate video events (Lights, Camera, Interaction) and we go all over the country; when I assemble the local hires and check out their gear the versions are all over the place. Lots of v5 still out there of course, but many folks are still running 5.0 vs. 5.1. A few have upgraded to 6, and there's always a smattering of 4 and 4.5s, very few v3. They also run it on everything from MBook Pros to Minis to old G4 iBooks.
These guys aren't usually full-time editors though, they're production guys making do in smaller markets with limited funds (or incentives) for upgrading. I think being in larger cities with bigger clients and expectations may be driving us to stay current, and to stay competitive yeah? JK _______________________________________ SCQT! We upgraded to 6.0 when we shot our first feature on Hi Def. Didn't know the flood gates would open. Thought it was gonna be shoot and edit... but NO.
"Now you need a hi def monitor" BAM! 3 grand. "Oh, now you need a card or interface between the Mac and the monitor." BAM! Another 3 Grand. "Oh, the plug ins you use for your film look won't work on 6.0, you need to upgrade to the new plugins for FCP HD." BAM! Another $400. BAM - ZONK - BOOM - i'm tired.
...so does that mean we have to use NSCQT Movie as well?
