I can't believe someone put subtitles on that youtube of the Chaser asking Americans stuff. It's in English, already, ya gimps.

I can't resist this, yes there is a vast swath of the British populus who are as thick as...pop music, TV, you name it it's been dumbed down...alot of people in Britain are illiterate - People have no sense of history and to think Churchil is a myth fills me with a sullen dispair. Kids TV and the toy market want girls in Britain under the age of 13 to speak like Bratz. It all adds up and we are in trouble.

I assumed that the subtitles were to cater for computers without speakers.

In my meager time in the U.K., I found the average person I spoke with (pubs, taxi drivers, hotel staff) to be much more literate than the average American. But yes, there are severely stupid people everywhere.

I think it's a self-inflicted global conspiracy to dumb down all of western society with mindless entertainment. What does the average American care about? American Idol? Football? Yeah, that's really raising out test scores, isn't it? Major scientific innovation comes from an intense interest in Dancing With The Stars.

Meanwhile China has their eye on the prize much more than we ever have. One of my pharma clients, when you go into their top labs, English is not even spoken, all signage, manuals and language spoken is Chinese. That's because every top scientist they hire seems to come from China or Taiwan.

And people call me cynical!

Also, isn't "Jedi" a recognized religion over there too?

Yeah, we have our fare share over here too. The NASCAR "Bubbas," people who watch I LOVE NEW YORK and AMERICAN GLADIATORS, and kids in Texas who think that Mexico is on our NORTHERN border.

OH!!!!!

"The official religion of Israel?"
"Muslim".

Almost did the signature "grafixjoe" move on that one -- tea through my nose. The Mossad will go have a talk with that guy.

"Were we even in the Vietnam War?"
"What religion are Buddhist Monks?"

Not to mention that those subtitles were riddled with typos and misspellings. I suspect a YouTube non-filmmaker did those subtitles him- or herself.

Heh. That gets my quote of the day today. Wanna buy you a beer now, Dan. Well, maybe not right now, given it's 9.30am for me, but you get the idea.

From the article
Not only are citizens ignorant about essential scientific, civic and cultural knowledge, she said, but they also don?t think it matters.

Scary. That sentence sums it up.
