G-Raid content moved to SATA methodology

G-Raid content moved to SATA methodology

I've been brought on as a closer on a lengthy documentary.
2x2 tb G-raids are almost full. I recommended and the client purchased a 6 tb sata raid.
I'm installing the sata today. so... imagine media everywhere on the g-raid's.
FCS 2 was "target mode" copied from a laptop
FCS 2, Leopard, Quad Core, AJA HD io
the current project spans 3 projects and has "select" time lines (sequences)

1. uninstall FCS2, re-install from disks
2. copy all G-Raid data to Sata
3. create new FC project, with related capture scratch on sata
4. export xml (current "select" time lines (sequences)
5. drag & drop clips from fresh sata into new project
6. Import xml

Thoughts, work flow appreciated.

HI, Chris.

in my opinion, you are way over-complicating this

- no need to re-install FCP/FCS
- why export XMLs,when you can simply copy/paste sequences

if these doces are nearly completed,
it would surely be a lot better to use all the existing logging that;s been done.
re-importing the clips from the drive, into a new project will just give you raw clips,
and you will lose al the existing work.

why don't you just collate the existing projects into one?
i undestand they might be too big.

the way i work on long form projects is to have ONE project that has ALL my rushes plus the CURRENT Cut of the film.

i have a few other seunqces in there,

but on the whole i keep a most of my other sequences, and that includes my "collection" sequences: collections of certain themed shots, in another project.

for archived versions, i maintian a daily back up of the projects.
i will also archive a copy of the edit sequences into a project after each "milestone" screening,
or each week, or whatever seems appropriate

in fact i really think you would be better off just keeping thing sreally simple.
leave all the media where it is, and just buy anther TB or 2TB drive,.
all the movieng around is only going to cause you problems,
and you're at a stage when you don't need them.

Hey Chris

Just open a new project and drag or copy and paste the sequences you want over... no need to export XML unless you are moving to an older version of FCP.

You can do the same with the clips / bins / effects etc...

Thank you both.
Can you address the drive issue:
Example:
Current project(s) is spanned over 2 G-Raids (one is over 90% full)
Current project(s) playback performance is extremely poor.

Transferring the G-Raids to sata equals "re-link" issues.

Remove unneeded render files both audio and video see if there are any clips you can get rid of to free up space.

Transfer some of the media from one RAID to the other to free up the rest.

The reason they are sluggish is due to the sheer amount of data on them - leaving about 20% free in each HDD is recommended as a bare minimum.

With SATA HDDs you will start to notice a decline in performance from about 50% full - its just the way of things.

Over 90% full...shame on you! G-Raids start to show progressive performance drops after 50% capacity. Relinking is a fact of life in this case I am afraid. Not a big deal though...once you find one file, the rest will fall into place.

When life gives you dilemmas...make dilemmanade.

BTW...removing unneeded render files could be a nightmare if you removed the wrong ones that were used to create QT Reference clips for grafix & such. I would move EVERYTHING over.

the biggest problem with reconnecting these days seems to be with multiclips.
sometimes if they become un-connected, they just wont re-conect.

so if you have multis, maybe do some careful experiments with them first.

Follow up:
Installed evo-HD 6TB evo

Transferred all G-Raid (2 drives full) over to evo, 6 hrs. +
Re-Installed FCS 2
Upgraded all apps
Created new project file, made new capture scratch folder
Opened existing project, dragged & dropped all bins and sequences into new
Saved
Closed all projects
Dragged & dropped all copied G-raid media into new capture scratch
opened new project
re-linked
works perfect
Thank you every one.
