OSX 10.5.3

I finally got my employer to buy me a MacPro and I am updating the software. OSX 10.5.3 is on the Apple download site but I don't find any comments on it here. Is anyone using 10.5.3 or is it still an unknown version. I don't want to get too far ahead of the curb and find out it makes my system unstable. Barry

Got 10.5.3 running on:

Dual G5 PPC 2GHz ATI 4.5GB with X800

MacBookPro Core2Duo 2.33GHz 2GB with ATi 1600

Mac Pro 8 core Xeon 5470 3GHz 10GB with nVidia 8800

No issues on any system.

Once you have installed the update (any updates in fact) be sure to run Disk Utility after installation and run Repair Disk Permissions on the Mac HD and then restart before using it.

I'm running 10.5.3 with all the latest OS and Final Cut Studio updates. I was between shows, so on a lark I decided to try updating everything just to see what happened, and it turned out fine. Been running that way for about a week now, no complaints yet.

Mac Pro, 10.5.3, QuickTime 7.5, After Effects 8.0.2, FCP 6.0.3, Shake 4.10, Soundtrack Pro 2.0.2, Motion 3.0.2, Color 1.0.2, DVD Studio Pro 4.2.1, Compressor 3.0.3.

No issues with QT 7.5? I've seen some folks are having playback problems...

Anyway, 10.5.3, QT 7.4.5, MPro 2.66, FCS2.03, Adobe CS2. All good so far apart from some minor glitches that may have to do with Leopard overall (my x1900 graphics card is flaking a bit).

Nope not a bean...

Try cleaning all the dust from your X1900 they are a crazy trap for it...

You may need to take it out and give it a good blow, that should help even if it isn't overheating at the moment summer is rapidly descending and its a good idea to keep things cool.

Thanks Ben, I had heard that might be a problem with these cards. I hope that does the trick and I don't need to replace it.

Thought I might bring up Larry Jordan's newsletter on this one... I'm growing cautious about upgrading. I think I'm growing old...

John - the noise on those X1900s is crazy too when they get dusty. I recently found this : [www.arctic-cooling.com] which you can use to replace the standard (dodgy, noisy) cooling system on the card. Just unplug, unscrew and replace.

When I pulled out my card recently the dust was so thick on the heatsink you could gouge into it with your fingernail, and I regularly clean out my machines.

Of course, it would probably void your warranty to have one of these installed if your Mac went back to the shop for any repairs, even though it's way better for the life of your gfx card and mac, so you wouldn't actually ever install one so you don't have to kill yourself, and then swap it back out at repair time.

Might get this for my new Nvidia 8800...

Is it noisy too Ben? The sad thing is that the picture quality is great on the 1900s, just SO stupidly noisy when hot, which, in Oz, is a lot.

Not at the moment - but its not that hot in the UK at present.

But I've heard good things about Zalman coolers - that particular one you can use on the X1900 as well and apparently it makes it quieter than the Mac/PC...

Might be something to look at towards the warranty end of the card - according to people who have it, its very easy to install except its a tight fit in the Mac and you need to cut the Zalman screw heads down a bit so it fits in nicely.
