So I select a 10 second clip, highlight it, apply the smooth cam effect and it says it will take 4 hours to analyze it. What am I doing wrong?

Smoothcam analyzes the entire clip that the section you have selected came from. So you're not analyzing ten seconds, you're analyzing the whole ten or twenty or whatever minute clip.

To workaround, export just the ten seconds you want to smooth, re-import and then add the smoothcam.

Just to add, USE a self-contained quicktime movie when you're doing this. A reference movie becomes useless after a while when the file has moved to a different drive or when the render files have been trashed (which you absolutely won't want later on in the project).
