Why wrong aspect ratio ?

Hi there,
I bet somebody knows the answer to my troubles out there..... whats simple for one can cause major headaches for me. Not really a computer buff but i'm giving it a go....

I'm running fcp 6 on an imac 2.4ghz intel duo and would love to know why even though i shot my footage in DV 16:9, when i import them they come up in what i think is a 4:3 window? ( both in the logging window and the viewer/canvas)
I've played with my sequence presets but to no avail. However when i export my movies sometimes they look good sometimes they dont , sometimes they're stretched, sometimes they're squashed..... occasionally they work fine.

Could somebody, anybody tell me what settings to use so i'm just watching 16:9 the whole time?
Does changing the aspect ratio to -33 make my pics 16:9?

You can export via COMPRESSOR. choose the preset you want to export with, then make sure in the INSPECTOR under GEOMETRY, change the PIXEL ASPECT and/or FRAME SIZE. you'll see what i mean when you get there.
