This is a question about file size discrepancies with ProRes 422 exported from FCP.

Shooting in HDV 60i, I capture my video using FCS and Apple ProRes 422 HQ. I then edit in 422, and for testing purposes, exported it in two ways:

A. Using QT Movie, with ProRes 422 HQ selected
B. Using QT Conversion, again with ProRes 422 HQ selected.

The resulting QT files of this 1' 26" movie are dramatically different in size.

A. is 15.9 MB
B. is 1.39 GB.

I cannot detect any visible difference between the two, except that B. is slightly darker. I also made a DVD with them, and again, no difference. Why such a huge discrepancy, and is there any point in using a QT Conversion export if no other parameters need to be adjusted?

Thanks,
Michael

Here we find an example for the use of "SCQTM"

Self-Contained QuickTime Movie

You simply exported what we does call... a Reference movie

You should have checked/selected "Make Movie Self-Contained" when using option A...

Terrific picture, Ben.

Much better than creepy ol' Joey's picture of himself looking like a KGB interrogator.

Best

Cheers Harry - I think it's going to become an ongoing evolution of sigs that get crazier...

Joey, you look like your blood pressure is way too high.

[A. Using QT Movie, with ProRes 422 HQ selected ]

Anybody flag that? I think that's an unnecessarily large container for HDV captures. Isn't 422 SQ enough for that?

Larry Jordan discussed this a couple months ago on the Buzz, in a Pick Our Brains section.
