rendering issue
December 16, 2008 07:35PM
I consistently have the error message "Error: Out of memory" showing up when i try to render specific gfx.
This happens with png files, psd and jpg.
I tried everything I can, reducing the size of the file to 1 MB... but nothing works...
What should i do?

Working off an Xsan server.
More than 10% free.

That's too full. 10% free is the drop-dead ceiling...you should be nowhere near that. I would get that down to at least 25% free then run some tests.

I keep my framestore 100-percent free at all times. It's the only way to be sure.

(What's that you say? I've already used that joke here? Well to heck with all of you.)

I usually work with tif, but png and psd should be alright. Jpeg can be flakey at times. Are they large files? What's their pixel dimensions? Scaling down the stills may help.

hmmm... what kind of filters do you have on them? What happens if you export the still as a video file, then apply the filters?

no filter
just basic motion stuff

Generally I advise clients/ people to avoid JPEGs in FCP, use PNGs.

Have you tried increasing the Still Cache in System Setting/Memory&Cache ?
That makes more room for stills, any kind of stills.

And if you're using a LOT of them, think about creating your photomotion to taste, exporting that as native QuickTime, re-importing that and replacing the still in the timeline with the reimport. No rendering, no tugging around a large overscan which can indeed soak up memory as well as CPU cycles.

Store the "factory clips" with keyframing intact in a bin, in case you need to tweak.
