OT: Ch 3&4 on HDCam Reads "DATA" on Machine Playback

As a freelancer I'm given many different tasks. Monday Jan 5th I have to digitize a few PBS docs on HDCAM (not SR)
and author for SD DVD playback. The tape label clearly reads CH 3&4 Dolby Surround Sound.
When played back on a HDW-1800 Ch's 3&4 say DATA above the meters. Ch's 1&2 are standard stereo. My client would like to see me use this Surround Sound option.

Q1. After digitizing 3&4 what magic bullet interprets the DATA?
Q2. Let's say the magic bullet decodes the Surround sound tracks... what happens next in DVDSP?

Best,
Christian Moriarty

Christain-

The magic bullet you are looking for is a device that sits between the VTR and your edit system. The only way I have seen this done is to decode the surround to discrete channels and capture those with the pictures.

They may be a software solution for this post capture, but I have never heard of one.
