Thanks for your fesponse Joe, after 10 days of pestering the AJA support team I phoned them (I'm 8 hours ahead) and got through and the digibetacam recorder setting is extended menu SERVO setting to AUTO 2. They said take a ref from Y channel out to ref in on the deck. I recall there being a different output from the K3 box and as luck would have it I don't have the digi deck here. Is there another ref output other than Y out? I use that for a monitor. Cheers Phil

Why don't you loop it - that's the standard way

I just remembered... Y out to ref in on the digi then composite out of the digi to the monitor.
