Any tutorials on blurring a small moving object as it moves across the screen.
Thanks,
Jim

there's this:

but i think Motion, with it's motion tracking abilities would be the way to go these days.

there are also some tracking plugins for FCP
Lyric make one

so do CHV

Tracking? I don't think that's what Jim is asking. Are you asking about animating an object across the screen and adding Motion Blur? As much as this goes against everything I hold sacred in grafixland...here's how you do it in FCP:

* Animate your object (Set center / keyframe / move center across screen / keyframe)
* Select the animated layer
* Menu Bar / Sequence / Nest Item
* Apply a Directional Blur to the nest / Set angle to your motion and crank up the "Amount".

This what you need?

oh, i see...

you know there is also a motion blur section in the motion tab pane.
pretty useless, it just adds staggered repeats of the object, and takes forever to render.

a simple direction al blur is best as you say.
there's one in the "Blur" filers, and trying it now on a moving shape i get Green "Preview" RT on my iMac.

but do you really have to nest?
i cant see a difference in nested and un-nested.

Nick,

If you don't nest and you put the blur on the moving layer, the blur is contained within the layer borders. Nesting puts the blur on the nest...thereby blurring everything in the nest...so yes, you have to nest if you want the edges of that object to be blurred and give the object a realistic motion blur. This is a common mistake I see all the time with folks doing composites in FCP.

Un-Nested:

You can also get some interesting effects in FCP with Effects > Time > Trails.

Or just put the object in the middle of the canvas and eat a handful of mushrooms smoking smiley
