Exporting 16:9 for use in full screen 16:9 iDVDPosted by rvgreene
Using a Panasonic DVX-100B video cam, I shot footage in the ?squeeze? mode. I captured it in FCP 5.1.4 and edited it. Picture appeared in both "viewer" and "canvas" with bars on top and bottom.
I exported to Quicktime. When I transferred the QT video to iDVD, the widescreen template still had bars at the top and bottom and appeared stretched. Looking at it in the 4:3 template produced a picture that was correct in aspect ratio but had bars at top and sides. My goal is to capture, edit and produce a DVD with full screen 16:9 appearance from a "squeezed" video source. I?ve tried many variations but can?t seem to make it happen. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What you need is explained in Apple support Article 305337. In a nutshell:
Open exported movie in QuickTime Pro Choose Window > Show Movie Properties click Video Track in the Name column Click Visual Settings Deselect the checkbox for Preserve Aspect Ratio Change the Scaled Size to 853 x 480 (NTSC) Save This is a clever Apple ploy to discourage iDVD use by pros Phil Cramer Indianapolis

Sorry, Phil, that won't work because he'll still have the black bars from the incorrectly set up Sequence. He said he sees black bars in the Canvas, which means his Sequence is non-anamorphic. That article is referring to anamorphic 16:9 movies that were correctly edited and exported (720x480, vertically stretched, proportions look "thin and tall", but aren't recognized as anamorphic by iDVD. www.derekmok.com

Thanks again for your response but I still have the problem.
For future use, what would be the correct procedure with a video shot on the DVX100B as far as: * Capture process or settings importing it to FCP? * Correct way to export it to Quicktime movie? * Correct way to import it to iDVD? Again, thanks so much for your help.

Did you read the FAQ? The only thing missing was that you didn't edit in a Sequence set to Anamorphic 16:9. Select the Sequence and press APPLE-0 to change that setting. Also, every clip that you had incorrectly inserted into a non-anamorphic Sequence has a -33.33 Distort - Aspect Ratio setting applied. Remove that. www.derekmok.com
Per your suggestion I highlighted the Sequence went to Sequence Settings.
It is listed as 720 x 480 and the Aspect ratio is NTSC DV (3:2) What changes, if any, would you suggest. The drop down menu on aspect ratio lists quite a few 16:9 choices. Which one? Also, should the Anamorphic 16:9 box be checked? Finally, how would I remove the -33.33 distort in the sequence? Kind of new at this. Thanks for your patience. Bob
> The drop down menu on aspect ratio lists quite a few 16:9 choices. Which one?
Leave that one alone. > Finally, how would I remove the -33.33 distort in the sequence? Select the clips in the Sequence, press OPTION-APPLE-V (Remove Attributes), check Distort. > Also, should the Anamorphic 16:9 box be checked? Yes. Please, for the third time, read that link I posted up top. www.derekmok.com
When I rebuilt a test sequence with anamorphic checked on "sequence" and "clip" in the browser all worked well. I then exported to Quicktime and made the conversion fix and dragged it into iDVD and a full screen 16:9 picture appeared.
However, the previously edited "master sequence" still has bars on top and bottom. But now that I know what to do when building future sequences, this should no longer be a problem. Thanks so much for all you help and suggestions. Much appreciated. Bob
