Hi y'all, I am fully FCP updated using KONA 2 card (updated) and need to get my head around HDCAM SR tapes. I have only just heard of this and cannot find codec setting in fcp 6.06. What do i do please if in fact I can do it??? Cheers Phil UK

Of course you can do it. Just set your system to capture in uncompressed 10-bit or ProRes 422 HQ, and set device control to Sony P2 protocol. Log-and-capture and off you go.

My opinion, ProRes HQ.

When life gives you dilemmas...make dilemmanade.

Or the new ProRes 4444, if you'd consider FCP7.

ProRes 4444 would be overkill unless the SR tapes in question were recorded in 4:4:4 RGB mode. HDCAM SR is usually used for 4:2:2 YUV material.

Phil you mentioned a Kona II card. That card is usually used in systems that predate the power needed to deal with prores (G5 Quad is the usual minimum.)

What are the specs of the signal that you want to get off the tape. SR machines can output 1080 and 720 at several frame rates. Also as Jeff mentioned, it is possible to record and playback 4:4:4 signals which require 2 cables from the machine outs to the Kona In (called duel link).

Basically you just need to match your Kona record setups to the signal you are capturing.

Yeah, there is no "native HDCAM" codec. Uncompressed 10-bit if you have the Kona 2 and a G5.

Indeed. He wasn't specific in his SR specs so I threw it out there.

That easy eh? Getting a deck is hard in London and costs £600 (£1000) per day.

Erm. Yes. It's HDCAM SR. It's expensive. Did you think that top-of-the-line gear was going to be cheap and easy somehow? I know you always complain about the costs in London, but this stuff is expensive EVERYwhere. It's TV, mate. Again, if it was cheap and easy, everyone would be doing it.

Well, it is cheap to get the software, so people think everything else is cheap..and easy.
