Activating Title Safe

I have FCP 6, Mac Pro OSX. Latest software downloads

I can't see my title safe in my canvas. When I scroll the menu down from my canvas title safe has a check next to it but it's unselectable (meaning the command is dull gray and not bold black to select it)
My viewer's title safe is working properly. Any suggestions?

Make sure Clip Overlays is checked on as well.
