livetype is motion?

I upgraded to the new FCS 2 about a month ago. Yesterday, I was plugging way in livetype when I opened Livetype gain it asked for the serial number. I entered the FCS 2 serial and it didn't work. I called Apple and they said that Livetype is now in Motion. I was working off my old livetype.

Will all my old livetype files work in motion now?
I am the only one that didn't know the new FCS 2 has done this?

The projects will work in Motion provided you have the content for them. Some of the LT content seems to be missing in Motion, textures, some objects aren't the same, some animations seem to be different.

do you have an OLDER serial number from when you first got Livetype?
worth giving that a go.

LiveType still works fine - wish they'd updated it - it's far easier to crank out titles and lower thirds in LiveType than futzing in Motion - you take the templates and rework them for quick and dirty supers....you can do the same in motion but the templates aren't there and it takes longer -- yes yes, I hear the LiveType naysayers braying in the background - there were a lot of cannned "oh that was done in LiveType" templates - but they were easily altered to look far better and more original. After all this time, Final Cut doesn't have a quick easy and robust titler other than Boris inside the program and even that takes some doing to line up and test over video.

The "new FCS 2" is actually FCS 3 ! And Motion 4 has new capabilities to deliver very nice titling, including end title crawls.

A lot of folks liked LiveType so I won't trash it, but when I tried it, I lost my background video upon return to FCP 5.x!! Probably did something terribly wrong. Got an ugly media-offline white clip. So for me, LiveType became DeadType.

Roundtripping now looks to be nicely enhanced for newer hardware, a newer OS, with FCS 3.

You most likely exported to LiveType, which is a reference movie that goes below the background bar and does not render in the LT project, and of course changing something in the reference movie kills the reference file dead.

Not to be pedantic, but as a teacher I guess I can be, there is no FCS3. It's just FCS. In documentation Apple designates it FCS (2009). I guess the theory is this kind of allows you to upgrade apps without upgrading the everything in the suite, as of course is the case with DVDSP and CT and the death of LiveType. Somethings go up, somethings go down, and something just never change.

All the best,

Tom

You have to specify in LT's Project Preferences window to include the background on export. It's turned off by default. Your video was considered a background element.
