Capturing 29.97 at 23.98 - audio drift

Folks:

I'm trying to figure out how to correctly capture at 29.97 tape at 23.98. I have FCP6, Kona 3, and a sony HDW-2000 HD deck. I've managed to grab the video at 23.98 and it looks great, but the audio is still playing at 29.97. From the little that I have found online, there seems to be a "tri-level reference" that might come into play here. I've also come across a setting on the deck thats sets the reference to 23.98P, but that causes FCP to freak out over Timecode breaks. Does anyone know how to do this or the direction I need to be looking in order to find the combination?? I'd like to avoid conforming the footage in cinema tools if possible....

Thanks,

Z

YOu can't capture 29.97 as 23.98...not with any capture card. You can only capture similar Hz formats. 59.94 as 29.97....or 29.97 as 59.94. You'll have to capture the tape as 29.97, then use Compressor to convert, or Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown.

Why do you want to avoid conforming in CT? There is no quality loss, ah, but there is time involved....

there is indeed time involved....

However, I am successfully capturing at 23.98 using a kona 23.98 setting. And it looks good, but the audio is playing back at 29.97. But, alas, for the clip I need right now, which needs to be synced, I'll use CT. Am I correct in my workflow - CT conform to 23.98, grab the 29.97 dyration from FCP and drop it into frame controls on Compressor? Thats what I've been doing and it seems to be right....

Thanks

YOu can successfully convert the PICTURE...fine. It is the audio that is the issue..right. So if you need to be in sync, then you remove pulldown later.

NO! DO NOT CONFORM IN CINEMA TOOLS! Remove pulldown. OR take it into Compressor and choose the same codec, but at 23.98. DO NOT CONFORM. That will make the clip, frame by frame...from 29.97 to 23.98, and thus cause it to be slow motion. AVOID this.
