distorted topped-out audio crunches
May 25, 2010 09:50AM
Hi, i'm cutting an adult feature with very loud moans, screams, yells and shouts. for this one particular scene the audio recorder was unattended hence the topping-out/crunching of the vocal. Without sending the audio to another party, does anyone know of anything that can be done in FCP Studio 2 to help tame or hide this distortion?

Many thanks,
Osbourne Cox

Nope. As with any digital sensor, be it audio or video, once you max it out, you're done. Clipped samples cannot be restored. All you can do is bring the level down to something reasonable, and maybe play with the EQ a little bit, but that second part would really be a waste of time. Distortion caused by overdriving the input cannot be fixed.

As the famous Jeff Harrell once said "working is better than not working."

One thing you could do, if you have a lot of time, is to smoothen out the jagged edges in the individual samples in Soundtrack or Logic or ProTools. Basically zoom in and slowly treat each rough edge...

Another thing to do is to switch to view the frequencies in StkPro, and see which frequencies are clipping and bring that down a little.

Another thing you can do on minor distortion is to run it through the clicks and pops fixer in STKPro a few times and see if it helps.

And your final alternative is to get the actresses to get into the recording studio to re-moan... I mean, ADR.

You can't restore information that is clipped, but you can sound a little better with a lot of work.

Yeah a LITTLE better with a LOT of work. Get them back in to re-moan it. Pretty sure no one's going to write a letter of complaint and it will be a lot less, erm, distracting. smiling smiley

Do adult features make money these days ?

This post from a week or so ago looked interesting for solving this sort of problem:

Pay no attention to my snickering friends, Osbourne.

This expensive ($350) program will fix overloads by rebuilding the waveform:

They claim (and I can attest to the truth of this) "eliminate overload distortion by automatically rebuilding clipped sections of audio"

What a bunch of prudes!

Let's rescue the original production track moans and not be forced into the compromise of second rate dubbed moaning.

Good Lord! Countrymen! Where is your sense of artistic integrity? Let the moaning be live! Let it breathe with the freshly minted expression of the original recording!

Ye Olde Moaner,

Harry.

Oh please. Second rate post-add moaning (preferably with a German accent) is de rigueur is it not?

Izotope looks interesting though.

And heh, I never ever though of the name Hardcastle like that before. You realise that's never going to get better now. Scarred, I am.

Jeff,

I have huge admiration for your technical knowledge and your acute mind. I also greatly enjoy your sense of humour.

But that was a bit below the belt, wasn't it ?

Thank you Strypes and Harry323 for your professional and mature response. As it turns out i've been able to use the audio recorded off one of the 5ds as a replacement.

Many thanks,

Wait a minute here...you are kidding, right? You announce that you are working on POSTING AUDIO MOANS in an ADULT FILM and you don't expect JOKES??? PLEASE.

Jude is right. Re-moan it.

Methinks he'd chosen the words "professional" and "mature" on purpose...

LAFCPUG Moderator porn. Yipes.

I do temp sound FX all the time, but I'd probably draw the line at moans.

Oh no. Don't do it, Derek. Get the original actors to do it.

clipped waveforms can indeed be rebuilt under many circumstances. Several software packages can do it, of which I own one such. What won't get fixed is the intermodulation distortion that goes along with it.

I had an AD give me one of those as a goof holiday gift. I promptly lost it by leaving it in a rental car. I wonder what went through the head of the next person to rent THAT car.?

Oh that would be in the CD player. It turns out, just for reference, groans and grunts don't turn out to be a very good score for a long drive.

Hey Steve! Great to hear from you after all these years. My restoration rig is an AudioCube (German software) and the module is DeClipper. Works miracles but again doesn't do anything for the intermod. There are other packages, as noted, that get close but I haven't found anything that does as well as DeClipper. The basic routine within the module is 2 steps: Lower the level of the clip to x dB below 0 dBFs, then have the system rebuild the tops of the waveforms. I've saved A-film dialog using this thing.
