Using overlays created in Photoshop

Using overlays created in Photoshop

Okay, I've tried to read about how to do this, (Ken Stone, previous posts, etc), but all it did was confuse me. So, please bear with me.

I have a sequence in FCP that's got the following settings:

HD 1440 x 1080 with pixel aspect ratio set to same (is that even correct?)

I'm trying to create an overlay in Photoshop, but I'm not sure what size to make it so that it corresponds to the sequence. I initially tried to make them using the 1920 x 1080 selection from the drop down menu in PS. I didn't want to do a custom one, because I wanted to have one that showed the title safe areas, hence, the reason I went with one that was one the list.

But now, the overlay doesn't look right in the sequence. I need to rebuild it I guess, but I wanted to make sure I do it correctly this time.

Does anyone know what settings I should be using in PS?

And, if I do a custom setting, is there a way to get the title safe guides?

i wonder why the PSD isn't working?
it should re-size it self to fit.

PSD's come into FCP as nested sequences (reflecting the layers in the file, even if there's only one layer)
you could try saving out of PS as a TIFF, or Jpeg.
that might behave.

OR

you could simply stretch / re-size the existing graphic in FCP.

turn the canvas to image & wireframe,
select the graphic,
then holding SHIFT you can easily grab / distort the edges of the wireframe to make it fit.

(not really answering your question, i know, just presenting some work-arounds)

Well, I can't simply stretch it because it contains words and shapes that have to fit around video. I tried doing the jpeg thing, but since I wanted it as an overlay, I would have to add a key or something to get it to superimpose which add another layer.

I ended up creating a 1440 x 1080 template in PS and played around with the guides to create my own title safe guides. So now I have a template and that seems to solve the problem.

PSDs come in flattened if they are created on a PC.
We have been dogged by this "feature" forever.

Well, I wouldn't know about that. I haven't used a PC in ten years. I live and work in a PC-free zone. smiling smiley

My rule is if you need to do something to the layers of the psd ... go to motion 1st. If not use a exported png or tiff.

and if you load a nest to the viewer and click the motion tab you can see the distortion under DISTORTION.

Or else create an alpha channel and save it as a Targa.
