XML "Critical Error" during project export

XML "Critical Error" during project export

Hi, Gang-

in FCP7 I'm exporting a 161 MB project via XML, using Interchange Format version 4 to open in FCP6. And I'm getting an "XML Translation was aborted due to a critical error."

* sigh* Clear as a bell.

I have checked "Include latest clip metadata (recommended)."

I'm doing this without the media drive attached, because the client needed it back and then discovered the other editor has only FCP6, not 7.

Is that an issue? Should media be explicitly connected to generate an XML file?

"Should media be explicitly connected to generate an XML file"

i don't think so.

that's a very big project file, Lorren
in my (fairly limited) experience with XML, that could be a problem.

do they need the whole project?

"Should media be explicitly connected to generate an XML file"

As Nick said in most cases that's not needed.

But the "Save project with latest clip metadata" tries to reconnect to the source files, so I would leave it un-checked. It doesn't make sense anyway as there no clips.

Andrew, Nick-

Thanks, useful!

I assumed clip data was saved within the project file?

I will try it with that box unchecked and report back.

XML files store data less efficiently than binary Final Cut Pro projects, so if you are exporting from a 161 MB project the XML file will be huge. You're lucky that you're getting this error actually, as Final Cut Pro will crash if the XML file is too large. I would recommend exporting each sequence individually to keep file sizes low.

And yes, clip data and QuickTime metadata is saved inside the FCP project and XML file. You should not need to have the clips online to do this as the data is cached.

My software:
Pro Maintenance Tools - Tools to keep Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Pro X, Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere Pro running smoothly and fix problems when they arise
Pro Media Tools - Edit QuickTime chapters and metadata, detect gamma shifts, edit markers, watch renders and more

Thank you, Jon. 161 MB is the largest I have on the machine-- wasn't mine, I inherited it. My own projects average no more than 100 MB, mostly less.

I was about to do a consolidate for the client but she needs all material a online to experiment and tweak, so it's premature. I will sensitize her to the danger.
