I remember there being a "hack" to make FCP chime after the render was done. Kind of like after effects.

Does anyone know how to make FCP play a sound after the render is done?

There was a script around a few years ago - I think I have a copy somewhere .. yes, here's a link to the .zip.

I also have an inkling there might be something new coming in this vein soon.

it says "system events got an error. Access for assistice devices is disabled."

any thoughts?

Yes, this, which was released today

It includes a render alert application which will play a sound, alert you in growl or even send you a text message. It was in Beta before now, so couldn't recommend it.
