Playback to monitor from Black Magic card
May 27, 2011 06:21PM
Mac: Intel 10.6.7
FCP: 7.0.3

Capturing HDV onto HDV HD and editing same in timeline.

Using a Black Magic Card for playback on a Sony 27" HDTV monitor.

Audio/Video Settings:

Sequence Preset: HDV-1080i60
Capture Preset: HDV
Device Ctrl. Preset: HDV Firewire

Video Playback: Blackmagic HD 1080i 59.94 (1920x1080

The problem is that the Video Playback cannot be changed to a 1440x1080 ratio for proper playback on the Sony monitor. It is grayed out. The images show up on the monitor but they are in the 1920x1080 aspect and compressed on top and bottom.

I will be away from my edit console but will return later this afternoon.

Thanks for your assistance as always.

That is the correct play back setting. You can only display actual 1440X1080 on the computer display, but Why would you want to?

When editing widescreen in NTSC I can see images from my timeline on the Sony HD Monitor, which is a real asset, however, when I edit in the HDV mode I only see the images in a squeezed vertical frame. The 1440x1080 selections are grayed out.

I solved the problem by doing a workaround. I removed the Black Magic card from the Mac. Now I see the images from the timeline in the proper aspect ratio. Its a pain doing it this way but at least it works.

I'm not sure I'm understanding this. My camera shoots in 1440x1080. But that's because it's recording to mini DV tape. But my final is 1920x1080. I view it through my Matrox to a HDTV and use the 1920x1080 setting. You shouldn't want to view it in 1440x1080, do you?

Hey PG

For a start you are very confused about NTSC and HD

NTSC is standard definition and NOT HD

ATSC is the new standard it covers most SD and HD frame-rates and sizes. Try to start using this as NTSC no longer exists as a current standard.

All HD is supposed to be played back at 16:9 either 1280x720 or 1920x1080

This includes formats that record 1440x1080 - they simply playback at 1920x1080.

Get someone to come in and show you how to set up your blackmagic card as there should be no issue displaying 16:9 HD on an HD monitor regardless of the HD format.

Thanks guys. I am going to try 1280x720 as a solution with the Black Magic card.

Thanks Ben for the reminder about new video standards. There's a nice map of the post-NTSC/PAL/SECAM world in the wikipedia "file:digital broadcast standards.svg".

ATSC includes 25/50 Hz video, and I'm tickled that it even includes 1080 p50. But the map shows ATSC limited to North (and parts of Central) America.

What differences between ATSC and DVB must editors heed?

Say what? No. Use 1920x1080 for your IO and monitor settings. Use the HDV preset (HDV, 1440x1080, HDV PAR, frame rate at 29.97 or 59.94Hz, audio at PCM 48k) for your sequence. Then check your monitor and make sure it displays full screen 1:1.
