Editing on an Airplane

Hey -

I may need to work on a project during a long flight on my MacBook. There's enough media that I may need to use an external travel drive that pulls power from the Mac's battery. Anybody ever done that? Can it work? How much of a hit is the battery life going to take?

It does drain your battery. How much? Depends on your drive, but I would say you may get around 2-3 hours, but it's just a wild guess and I've never timed it.

LaCie Rugged drives will work, but they will drain your Mac battery in a hurry. I would guess you might get 2 hours of editing time if you have a brand new battery fully charged before the flight.

You may or may not get fully smooth playback, but I'm always surprised how much performance I can get from one of those little drives.

I suggest booking a flight on Virgin America if you can -- they have A/C plugs in every seat -- if not spring for an external to power you on a long flight

Lacie rugged works well with my Macbook pro.
Get one with firewire 800 connection.
