I can buy a Mac Pro

Apple Mac Pro 2.66GHz Quad Core
Productcode: APPLEMB871NA

specs.
2,66-GHz quad-core Intel Xeon 5500-processors
- 8 MB volledig gedeelde L3-cache per processor
- 3Gb (3 x 1 Gb) geheugen

Now i work with a MacBookPro 2.5 DualCore

Question:

Is this MacPro a real step forward
Is the iMac i7 much faster ? ( 3.4 / 256 SSD )

considering:
MacPro Is avaiable new at this moment appr. 2000 US $ ( in the Netherlands ...)
The iMac 27 i7 3.4 appr. 4000,- US$

thanks

The current wisdom is to wait on the MacPro. At some point, say 1st half of 2012, Apple will either come out with an upgrade or a major re-design or even possibly discontinue it entirely. So, unless you really need one for current work, and can afford to take a gamble, don't do it just yet.

You sure about your pricing? The cheapest MacPro sells here (Germany) for about 2.000 Euros + VAT.

I just bought an iMac as a stop-gap till the new what-evers come out next year since my Mac Pro is having a hissy fit. So far it's fine for simple work, but I'm certainly not pushing any serious HD through it. I agree with Clay, if you can wait, do.

thanks,

As I said the dilemma is the MacPro 2.66 Quadcore (Xeon) ( early 2009 ) discount for 1499,- euro
The iMac i7 3.4 is centainly a faster machine but will cost 2100,- euro in NL at the moment.
But is the difference really so big (I use mainly for FCP7 ).....?

But I can wait of course....

and : thanks again

Ok. Understand. That price was for an older model MacPro. However, since FCP7 is only using about 4GB of RAM (it's a 32 bit app), I wouldn't expect you'd see much difference at all between the two machines you mention with basic editing. The new iMac of course has Thunderbolt, which will become more interesting as time goes on. But you could equip the older MacPro very cheaply with an eSata card if fast external storage is an issue.

Still, if you don't need to make a purchase now, bank the cash for a future purchase and wait to see what Apple comes up with in the next 3-6 months.

Ask them what is the system identifier on the machine.
2009 is ok but the system profile effects the compatibility a lot.
