R-Name gone in 10.7 - Alternatives?Posted by J.Corbett
HEY, i just upgraded to 10.7 on my 1,1. However the upgrade nullified my r-name app.
It was a nice app and used relatively often and it was FREE. Does anyone know of a free app that will do the same without copying the files like automator does? Andrew, It maybe i will try it but i really loved r-name. It was quicker.
I have an automator script that i will try to modify. Another thing about Lion. Be Prepared to clean house in Safari. (internet files, launch agent, launch deamon, and one other i can not think of off hand). i love R-Name on my older macs, but have had to find an alternative on the newer ones.
guess I'm not as savvy as stypes no regrets about paying $20 or so for A Better Finder Re-namer. i've gotten a lot out of it's ability to name music files based on the iTunes metadata. nothing to do with my video work, but very useful none the less! nick
We've got one in Pro Media Tools too. It's especially useful at handling image sequences because it has several features for finding gaps, renumbering frames, modifying padding, etc. I use it all the time for dealing with VFX shots.

There was a Universal Binary version right at the end of life of R-Name - but like the other version its no longer available.
If you can't afford Pro Media Tools (which you should have anyway!) Andrew's suggestion of Automator is a good one. For instant answers to more than one hundred common FCP questions, check out the LAFCPUG FAQ Wiki here : [www.lafcpug.org]
Not at my computer now, but this is the first hit on google, and it's UB.
[www.macupdate.com] I heard good things about A Better Renamer, but I'll use R-Name till it breaks. You can set Automator not to copy, but R-Name is not as convoluted and has just the features I need. www.strypesinpost.com
There's also Name Mangler: [manytricks.com]
It's not free, but $10 isn't going to break the bank. Don't know if it works under Lion though...
Cool. I like free apps or donation ware. Paid apps can be a bit of a hassle, especially if I'm working on a project. Many of the projects that I work on, already have a basic setup that they acquired from a VAR. So I have to either use my own license (and I have to uninstall after the project) or convince the producers to purchase the apps, and then there is the issue of getting an license for every seat, which will then increase the total cost. $20 bucks for an app may not seem like much, but then when you have 4-5 seats and there are 4-5 apps that cost $20 a piece, it gets that much harder to convince the producers. Whereas, free apps are easy- just download and install on all the seats.
