Can I create hardcoded (burned in) subtitles from a softcoded .txt file?

Hi,

I have a film that I created softcoded subs for in a third party program. The subs are in a .txt file that I imported into Encore for the SD DVD.

Now for a international festival, the film needs an Pro Res HD copy with hardcoded subs.

I don't want to have to recreate the subtitles within the editing program. Is there a way I can import the text file to Premiere or FCP via xml? Or maybe there's some sort of other workaround? TitleExchange Pro?

Thank you

TitleExchange Pro is not a workaround, it is a solution!
the formatting of the subtitle file needs to be converted. FCP cant do it.

but for a one-off job TEP could be a bit exy
there are other subtitling apps like Inqscribe that can make an FCP XML, but i'm not sure if you can import a subtile file into it.

can your original subtitling software create an XML?

another approach might be to avoid FCP, by using an app like Submerge,
which will create a hard-coded version of your film from a video file and an subtitle file.
i'm not sure how it works with ProRes.

good luck with it, i'd be curious to know what you settle on

I'm trying to use TitleExchange Pro but I'm finding it a bit confusing. I changed the in format to the right one, and imported my .txt file. Then it ask me to select template xml with generator?

Is this something I have or need to create?

Any help would be appreciated.

Joe,

You need this template to make a sequence with the text generators (for the subtitles).

FCP
1) create a sequence with your settings.
2) insert a text generator - I would recommend TextUp (can be found under Spherico)
3) set up the parameters till they fit your needs
4) export as XML

TitleExchange
1) select Adobe Encore as source
2) select FCP XML as target
3) select FCP XML Options
3a) in the right box deselect Font Settings From Source
3b) if you want fades check the Fade I/nFade Out, check Settings and enter the values. If don't want fades uncheck.
3c) on the left side disable the Use Template in the Templates tab
3d) in the Saving and Handling tab disable use XML import options
4) make sure that the Use Source File TC is checked
5) Import the Encore file
6) Save the XML

FCP
1) import the XML

If you are using the free version of TEP you have to split the Encore.txt subtitles into groups with less then 50 subtitles and do the above steps for each of them.

Andreas,

Thanks for the walk though. However, even after following the instructions (it's possible I did something wrong),
when it asks me to select template xml with generator, I navigate to where it is and the xml is grayed out.

I ended up using Submerge, pretty simple...open movie, import subtitle file, and export. TEP seems like a great program
just not sure why it's not working for me.
