"safe zone" for TV editing

I'm a newcomer to digital editing and I have experienced some troubles in approximating the viewable area on a television (NTSC) when working in FCP. Does anyone know the dimensions and orientation of the area where I can place content that needs to be seen without the use of an MTSC monitor?

There is a button on the controls tab that outlines the viewable areas on your viewer in FCP. Look for it when you use a video generator in its controls tab.
