MPEG2 export

MPEG2 export
May 25, 2005 11:08AM
I used to be able to export MPEG2 files from FCP and FCP Express. I recently reinstalled all the apps, after installing Tiger and I can't seem to find that option anymore, in the Quicktime conversion pulldown window. I had a MPEG2 export module for Quicktime (I believe it was Quicktime 6.4) and I think that gave me the option. Do I need a new MPEG2 Quicktime plug-in for Quicktime 7 or is there something else going on?

You got DVD Studio Pro? If so reinstall it and all should be well.

Yes, I do. That's the one application I haven't installed yet in the new drive. Darn! So DVDSP is the one that installs the MPEG2 export module in the entire system?

Thanks much Mike.

Hi Mike,

I have installed the complete FC Studio (DVD SP 4) along with QT 7 Pro.

MPEG 2 is nowhere to be found in Export QT with Conversion. MPEG 4 yes, MPEG 2, gone.

So what would be the option under QT7 and FCP5? By the way Ken, have you tried encoding with that H264 codec? It's amazing. The quality is absolutely great and the file sizes really small, but it took me an hour to encode one minute on a Dual 2 GHZ G5.

There is now (Tiger - QT 7 - FCP 5>, only one option, use Compressor. This according to Apple.

Yes, I have done some testing with h.264. I'm in love ... what can I say. Really amazing.

Go to

and take a look at 'Kindom of Heaven'. H.264 at work.

I know, the quality and the file sizes were amazing. I thought it would be ideal to put samples on my website. But how about the processing time. Unless I was doing something stupid, it makes its use prohibitive.

It does take forever.

im doing 30seconds in 5-6 minutes.
this is with a small frame size (320x150)
dod 480 x 270, which took corespondingly longer.

i noticed that it seemd faster if i didnt try to do ANYTHING ELSE on the computer.
this thing is a CPU hog.

i also notice that when the export starts, all your render files seem to go offline in FCP:
i rist get a lot of red "nededs rendering", then nothing at all.
is this symbolic of FCP going past any render files, and completely re-encoding from the master materials?

i always thaought that's what it did.

Hello Ken

'According to Apple' in the FCP5 manual Part IV page 225 they state that
MPEG2 Export is possible via File -> Export -> Quicktime Conversion.

I stumbled over the same problem as others in this thread (to not have the MPEG2 Export option under quicktime conversion).

Looking into the manual gives me the answer on the page stated above, but
on my System with all the latest upgrades I seem to have only the option of
exporting MPEG2 via Compressor....

Sounds weird, and probably is a missunderstanding between Apple Engineers and the Manual Writers or the export option appears only if you (re)-install in a certain order.

But then again, Final Cut Studio installs it all automatically....

Has anyone got news on this?

cheers
Sandro

Hi Sandro,

Apple teck support now says that MPeg 2 can only be found in Compressor and not in QT.

It is missing from my QT.
