BEST CROSS PLATFORM COMPRESSION

Hi I need to use compressor to make video files that will work on as many platforms as possible. Quicktime MPEG 2 Program is not working well, sometimes it does not even work on Apple computers. My DVD Studio Pro has bombed and I am in Afghanistan and cannot get the disks to reinstall it.
So I need to find out which codec will work on most computers and, hopefully, TV's. Any ideas?
Barring that, any downloads suggestions?
