Duplicate project

So I've been duplicating my projects to version it out as a work around to not having sequences. I've noticed that each project with render files is about 20 gigs. This means by version 5 I've used up 100 GBs. Is there a better way of working? If I uncheck include render files option will it just create new render files? Just trying to get a handle on media size.

I don't know if this is a better way but I have been creating empty compound clips in the events library opening them and adding and editing those compound clips as if they were sequences instead of using projects as sequences. This work flow does have it's down sides as well as it's up sides.
