Option - i (delete inpoint) bug?

This reported by Craig seeman at creative Cow:
-------------------------------------------------

It seems that I always must hit Option-i TWICE to delete an inpoint. The i key works as well as the option key works on all FCP functions so I'm certain it's not my keyboard. The problem is consistant (not intermitant). I always must hit Option-i twice to delete an inpoint.

Anybody else experiencing this?

Quicksilver Dual 800
FCP 4.02
OSX 10.26

Yeah,
I just tested that, and you're right.
viewer and canvas.

FURTHERMORE:
After I Option I (twice) to delete the in,
if I undo with Apple Z, I get the in back, but I also lose whatever action I just did in the same window
If I undo with Edit > Undo, this doesn't happen.

Check it out:
Work in the viewer
Mark an in,
Mark an out.
Option I (twice) to remove the in.
Undo.
You get the in back, but lose the out.

Work in the Canvas/TL
Mark in
Make a clip invisible
Option I (twice) to remove the in
Undo.
You get the in back, but the clip becomes visible again.

I tested this, and a single option+i deleted my IN point.....(as it should)

I then remembered I was running with the Danish keyboard setup. After the shift to U.S keyboard I see the reported error!
Back in Danish input it works again....

Please confirm this....

Regards
Anders
The bug happens with:

U.S.
Australian
British
Brazilian
Dutch

But not with:

Danish
Belgian
Canadian
French
German
Irish

As I said on the Apple forum, I could repeat this behvior when I first tried it. After using the menu I can no longer repeat the double Option-I bug, nor can I repeat the undo error. Undo reinstates the In point, leave the Out untouched.

There must be some circumstance that triggers this. BTW, I've closed and reopened the app a few times, and I can not now bring the double Option-I condition back. This is on a US keyboard.

All the best,

Tom

I'm trying a few out here.

British completely disables Option I on my system.

I've closed and re-opened, and can repeat it.

Lets see what hapens later after a few more re-starts.

Hmm....
Dutch was a Double Option I the first time, now totaly doesn't work, like British.
And now Autralian's kaput! (Or "Buggered" if I use the local vernacular, which seems only apropriate)
I'll be back afer this quick re-start...

Nick
Yep, all ok after the re-start, and OPtion I is now working in any language.

Dank je wel

Re: Option - i SOLVED?

Ok, I think I have a theory on this bug:

All inputs that does the double opt-I has an accent mapped to opt-i.
That means that the OS toggles an accent on the first opt-I press and then waits for a second key to be pressed before sending the ASCII code to the frontmost app.

If you try it in textedit youll see the accent needing a second keypress before sending a real charecter to the app

Could be right there, Anders.
But maybe there's a learning process here, (or forgetting of bad habits?)
as since the experimenting with the language, Option I is now
AOK (US)
Jolly Hocky-Sticks (Brittish)
Beauty-Bottler (Australian)
I can now reproduce the Bug on my system, please confirm.

SYSTEM: DP 1GHZ MDD, 1,5 GB, OSX 10.2.6, FCP 4.0, QT 6.3

SEQUENCE: DV PAL 48 KHZ

- Use one of the keyboard inputs:
U.S.
Australian
British
Brazilian
Dutch

-Open a project in FCP.

- Set an IN point.

- Pressing opt-I once will remove IN point as expected.

- Make apply a non realtime effect on a clip

- Set a new IN point.

- Press Alt+R or select the effect and press Apple+R

- Cancel the render.

- Press opt-I once

EXPECTED: IN point will disappear
RESULT: Nothing happens. Pressing opt+I again will remove the IN point.

WORKAROUND:

- Press opt+I twice.
- Restart FCP4
- Switch to a Keyboard Input that works (eg. Danish)

It happens every time I cancel my render on a clip.
This could be the same underlying cause as the old "It takes 2 Option-tildes to extend a marker" bug. Sometimes the app gets into a state where you have to hit Opt-tilde twice, to extend a marker. but it is not constant. Happens to me all the time.

Would be interesting to see what happens if, when the bug arises, you go to Tools > Keyboard layout and hit the reset button.

Craig here, hi folks.

Rebooting does nothing for me. Problem remains. I switch to Canadian in Prefs/International/Input Menu and opt-i works for example.

Opt-i must be double hit anytime I go to US keyboard. Note specifically the "i" must be double hit. I can hold down the option key.

Ralph, Tools>Keyboard layout reset did not help.

Someone please take the pins out of the voodoo doll.
Hi, Craig.

I actualy wallowed around in the international keyboard preference, trying all sorts of nationalities, and then going back to FCP to see their results.
It got to a point where the double Option-I keyboards (including mine, Australian) wouldnt respond at all to Option I.
It was then that I restarted.
(Actualy that was when I crosed my fingers and re-started)

Maybe you dont have to get to the stage I did, but you do have to go back and forth a couple of times between various keyboards and FCP, befor re-starting.

It's weird.

Nick
Anders, how on earth did ou figure THAT out???

Gosh darn hang on to yer hats.

I opened a new project and the problem was GONE.
Opened one of the problem projects and the problem is back.
Imported clip from problem project into new project and no problem.
Seems the opt-i bug is tied to the project. Now I've had this bug form some time but maybe something I've done prevents it from reoccuring.

In short, the only way I can make the bug stop in a project that has it is to change keyboard nationality but in the latest new project it's gone and I can't get it to happen (so far).
