pop-up buttons?

hello!
so a client wants the following:
1) at certain points in the dvd,, he wants a button to pop-up giving the viewer the option to navigate to a clip with additional commentary. if the button is not chosen, it dissapears after, say, 30 seconds.
2) he wants a small version of the menu to always be visible in the lower left corner, thus giving the viewer the easy and quick option to bounce around to different chapters at any given moment.

Are these two things possible?
If so, could someone point me in the general direction of how it might be done? I think it is beyond my DVD authoring skills, but maybe not....
thanks!

Both things are possible. Well, they are not two different things. You could have the mini menu between certain markers and a variation with another button, in another spot.

One caveat: If you use buttons over video, you can't have subtitles while the buttons are visible. Buttons/overlays make use of the same technology that puts subtitles on screen, so you can't have both.

To place a button or buttons over video, you have to place (at least) two markers in the track's timeline. The first one is where the button becomes visible and the second is to make it disappear.

After creating the two markers, point to the first one and bring the contextual menu (right click or control click). Select the Button Highlight option. Then, double click the subtitle 1 stream at the same place in time where the marker is. This will create a subtitle clip, between the first and second marker and thus setting the duration for the button(s). Finally just drag on the track's Viewer to create the button(s)/hot spot(s). You can type text or load a graphic for the button. Make sure you enable Force View on the Inspector, so that the buttons do appear when the video reaches that point.

It's an interesting capability, isn't it?

Adolfo is spot on (as ever!), but one small warning about using subtitles for displaying graphics is worth saying...

If the user fast forwards whilst the subtitle is showing then it will disappear, only to reappear when the next marker is encountered after playback resumes. If you use a graphic in the lower corner for the menu display and only use two markers for it then you run the risk of the viewer 'losing' the image.

The way around this is to repeat the image between markers along the length of the footage. That way, if the image gets 'lost' then it will reappear fairly soon when playback resumes. Don't forget that there are limits to the number of chapter markers that you can place in a track, though!
Sorry, you do not have permission to post/reply in this forum.
