Trying to use the new optical flow time remapping what-not in Motion...

...does Motion do its background number crunching on the whole 20 minute master clip?

not just the 10 secs that I've sent to Motion as a new project?

is this kinda Crazy?

Yes, it does. Exactly the same way SmoothCam works in FCP. The same way time remapping accesses the entire media stream.

So, how does one media manage to allow for this?

Motion filled up 90G of my HD and was still going when I forced quit.

Maybe my question is...is it possible to make this small section of the media completely independent w/o recapturing?

From FCP, export out the piece you want, with some handles, import back in, and replace in the timeline. Then send that clip to Motion for optical flow. A pain, I know, but that's the only way.

I'll give that a shot...

thanks Mark.
