Motion Project

Can anyone help me with motion, I am trying to make a logo circle around a globe. I went to simulation, Orbit Around seemed to be the best method but I can't figure out how to do it.
I want it to look like the logo passes on front of the globe and then goes behind it.
I would appreciate any help.

Are you using 3D layers?

No I don't think so. I have a HD video of a globe and a jpg for the logo that I want to go around it.

Does the globe have an alpha channel? Or do you plan on masking the globe?

I am using Nasa's blue marble globe, it is in HD 1080 since it has a black background and all I want is the globe to show I used a circle mask to remove the background.

My jpg was the same way it had a black background so I used a color key filer to get rid of the black.

I got this working after a bit of playing around with the settings...

Make the layers 3d.
Apply the "Orbit around" behavior to the logo.
In the Inspector, drag the globe layer to the Object well.
Turn the Influence up all the way (you can adjust it later)
No Drag.
Include X,Y, and Z.
Set the Pole Axis to Z.
you should be golden.

Okay I am going to try to see if I can do it this weekend. I will keep you up to date. Thank you.

Okay these are my settings but the logo does not MOVE! First I tried putting the globe in Layer 1 and the logo above it in Layer 2; then I put both the globe and logo in layer one I thought maybe they should be together. It won't move either way. I applied the Orbit Behavior to the logo but nothing moves with the Orbit Around Behavior. My earth is spinning around because it is a movie, my logo is a gif.

I can manually drag the logo with the Basic 3D Setting but nothing moves when you play it unless you go back and click the record button and move the logo i.e. two frames and manually drag the logo a little bit with the 3D setting; move the logo two more frames and then drag the log a little bit more around with the 3D settings. I know it can't be that hard, I am just missing a vital step.

Basic 3D Settings
X rotation 0.0
Y rotation 0.0
Z Rotation 0.0
Distance 0.00
Perspective .50
Black Face Style Center

Behavior
Orbit Around
In the Inspector I dragged the globe lay to the Object well
Strength 51.00
Falloff Type Linear
Falloff Rate 1.00
Influence 40000.00 ?this is all the way up
Drag 0.00
Direction Clockwise

When you say to set the Pole Axis to Z where do you do that at?
Also I am setting the parameters for the Basic 3D and then
going to the Behavior Orbit Around and settings its parameters as you told me.
The Globe has been dragged into the Object well.

Just to make sure- You have Motion 3 (which comes with FCS 2), right?

Try this-
Click on the Orbit Around Behavior in the layers tab. Go to the Inspector tab, and then under the behaviors subtab, click the arrow next to "Include." Make sure X,Y, and Z are all checked. Pole Axis will then appear right below that, and choose Z axis.

Maybe this is the problem. No, I have Motion 2 which came with Final Cut Pro 5 Academic. I'm a poor grad student, I can't afford the updates. I will work on your instructions to see if I can still get it to work on Motion 2. Thanks.
