If I made a uncompressed QT file of the sequence it would play back o.k. but that was unacceptable to me since I was able to edit without any issues off of older eSATA RAID systems. They eventually swapped it out with a Sans Digital miniSAS RAID enclosure. Not sure what the problems were with the Qx2 systems but I could play the same 30 minute shows off of a CalDigit VR mini connectedby rdedits - Café LA Re: Is the other ways to Log & Transfer? - 12 years agoAndrew, What kind of log would I be importing from the producer when using Avid? The XDCAM browser log? richby rdedits - Café LA Re: Is the other ways to Log & Transfer? - 12 years agoIn most cases it is XDCAM footage. Avid Media Log does not work with clips either. It seems like setting them up with a copy of FCP is the easiest way to achieve this. Does the XDCAM browser let you rename clips and save as individual media files? I haven't tried it but will take a look once I have a moment.by rdedits - Café LA Is the other ways to Log & Transfer? - 12 years agoI have several producers who like to log their own footage for projects and back in the tape days that was fine but with digital files it seems like I'm always copy and pasting into Log & Transfer and than importing the clips, a lot of wasted time in my opinion. Other than giving them a copy of FCP to load their own footage onto a portable drive, is there any other work flow I can suggest toby rdedits - Café LA Re: "SmoothCam" - 12 years agoThanks strypes. Why does SmoothCam re-size the shot? Is it isolating the most unsteady part of the image? I personally don't think the shots need anything but this particular producer loves when I use the plug-in. I just gotta say this again.... smoothcam on steady cam footage... really?by rdedits - Café LA "SmoothCam" - 12 years agoI've been using this video plug for a lot on some bad camera work lately, even had to use it on some steady cam footage! I tried applying it today to some shots and it made it worse. I usually use the standard settings most of the time and it works great but today it was resizing the shots and had some strange blurring looks to it when the shot would become jumpy. Any suggestions on adjustment seby rdedits - Café LA Re: Render Selection not working - 12 years agoI bet I had it set in FCP 6 and after upgrading to FCP 7 I lost it... that's the only reasoning I can think of. Thanks for helping me out folks!!!!by rdedits - Café LA Re: Render Selection not working - 12 years agoThat's how I have it set BUT I figured it out... and boy do I feel like a knucklehead! Under render selection I only have "needs render" selected, the parts that I was trying to render today were all "Unlimited" sections of the timeline. Not having that selected the command was useless. Once I had it checked in the "render selection" settings, it worked the way it shby rdedits - Café LA Re: Render Selection not working - 12 years agoThanks for the link! I tried trashing the preferences but still getting the same results... drag..by rdedits - Café LA Re: Render Selection not working - 12 years agoYep Nick that's how I have my selections set. Now just to be clear, where are the preferences to be trashed? "Final Cut Pro User Data"? i see FCP 6 and FCP 7 Prefs in that folder. Coming from Avid and still figuring some of these little things out.by rdedits - Café LA Re: Render Selection not working - 12 years agoCheck to all the above suggestions. I can't figure it out, I haven't changed a thing and up till last week all was fine. Been racking my brain trying to recall if I made any changes but nothing is surfacing. grrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!by rdedits - Café LA Render Selection not working - 12 years agoCan't figure out why the "render selection" has stopped working. I have to resort to rendering the entire timeline every time I want to render just a couple of effects. Has been working fine up until last week and now it just flashes on the screen when I select it from the drop-down menu.by rdedits - Café LA Re: CalDigit VR Mini RAID Question - 12 years agoWell it turns out these people were shooting in AVCHD! Seemed to edit fine and fast with the VR Mini set to RAID 1 BUT when I was exporting and than compressing in compressor my MBP was really slow, unbearably slow. I ended up switching my connections over to my eSATA connection, speed picked up a bit but was still slow.by rdedits - Café LA Re: CalDigit VR Mini RAID Question - 12 years agoI was editing with some XDCAM EX today and it seemed to be cruising along nicely at RAID 1.by rdedits - Café LA Re: CalDigit VR Mini RAID Question - 12 years agoI might just try this project at RAID 1 and see how it goes. I was using my G Raid mini on the road, backing up files as they were given to me but on the eve of mastering, after obtaining additional assets from the client, POOF! dead G Raid. Spent the next 3/4 hours rebuilding and locating the assets I had lost. If I can edit at RAID 1 without a huge drop off in performance next week than I'll stby rdedits - Café LA Re: CalDigit VR Mini RAID Question - 12 years agoThanks Andy. Great! I have an eSata card for my MBP. So your suggesting to keep it at RAID 0?by rdedits - Café LA CalDigit VR Mini RAID Question - 12 years agoJust purchased this 2TB Mini for working on the road. It comes set as a RAID 0 but after my G-Raid disaster I'm thinking of setting it up as a RAID 1. Will the speed drop-off seriously mess with my editing in HD, mostly XDCAM EX. Working in FCP7 on a MBP 2.4 GHz Intel Core2 Duo. Here's what CalDigit had to say, VRMini in RAID 0 can hit 170MB/s under the optimal environment. - in RAID 1,by rdedits - Café LA Re: OT: G-Drive Raid doesn't show up any more - 12 years agoYep SSD RAID sounds good to me! Have you seen the VR next to a VR Mini? Is there much difference in size? Really the small size is what is drawing me towards the purchase but if there really isn't much of a difference I could see going towards the VR. Gotta make the buy Monday for this gig starting next Sunday.by rdedits - Café LA Re: OT: G-Drive Raid doesn't show up any more - 12 years agoI believe the min's come with a power supply too. You can definitely get more bang for the buck on the VR's but I'm really liking the size of the VR mini.by rdedits - Café LA Re: OT: G-Drive Raid doesn't show up any more - 12 years agoI've always been a big G-Tech fan until I purchased the G-Raid mini. So happy to have this great little drive I could put into my backpack and take on the road to edit. Worked great for 3 months and now it's failing regularly and losing footage, backed-up of course but still a pain. Perfect timing with a week long mobile gig coming up. I'm going to have to grab a CalDigit VR mini for this one. Anby rdedits - Café LA Re: Need some seasoned FCP editor opinions. - 13 years agoI'll probably still purchase FCP X but the fact that I can get FCS 3 for $200 just makes the decision easier. I appreciate everyone's input here, thanks!by rdedits - Café LA Re: Need some seasoned FCP editor opinions. - 13 years agoHa! Your right NOTHING makes editing easier. Let me put it differently, three features that stand out to me are, and PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong. You can export and render your sequences in Compressor in the background while still editing in FCP Add/remove transitions globally in your sequence. Can you adjust audio globally too? Speed changes improvedby rdedits - Café LA Need some seasoned FCP editor opinions. - 13 years agoStarted on the backend of tape editing but for the most part I've worked on Media Composer my whole editing career. Just started to do some serious editing on FCP 6 over the past 5 months. Like it a whole lot but I've been holding off on the FCS 3 upgrade to see what FCP X would be like before making any purchases. After the announcement, and liking what Apple has to offer, I'm thinking I shouldby rdedits - Café LA Re: Weird and Intermittent Sync Problem - 13 years agoI wish I could turn down business Jude! Hopefully next time around I will be in control from the start. Trevora: Thanks for the tips. I'll give them a whirl this morning.by rdedits - Café LA Re: Weird and Intermittent Sync Problem - 13 years agoTotally agree Derek and under my normal workflow I would have more control of this situation from the start. This project came to me at the last minute. All the off-lines were completed by the producer and some of the finishing by a different editor. Things happen and I was asked to finish the project. I took the word of this client and figured it was pretty much assembling the show and outputtinby rdedits - Café LA Re: Weird and Intermittent Sync Problem - 13 years agoAll of the footage was already ingested by the producer of the show and as far as I can tell FCP is telling me it's Apple ProRes 29.97. He did bring a G Raid 4 TB drive with him that has one of the shows sequences already edited. I would normally transfer all the media to my RAID set-up but things got a bit crazy and I had to run with it. Not much audio on the timeline, 4 tracks at best. Just canby rdedits - Café LA Re: Weird and Intermittent Sync Problem - 13 years agoThanks Jude. I actually did just that, exported a QT Ref of the entire show and it played fine. I needed to make some DVD approvals and they worked just fine. I just don't get it, yesterday the entire 30 minute show played out fine without any problems, today all these weird hiccups. This isn't the first time this has happened, usually rendering everything in the timeline solves the problem. Alsoby rdedits - Café LA Weird and Intermittent Sync Problem - 13 years agoHopefully I can explain this clearly. Working on a SD 30 minute show. All sequences where copied over to the master project and assembled into the 30 minute timeline. I dragged the copied sequences into my viewer and assemble edited them into the 30 minute timeline thus creating several nested sequence's. I needed to edit in a bug for the show on V2 plus some show bumpers. Sometimes, not every tiby rdedits - Café LA Re: Sequence editing - 13 years agoThanks Tom for running through that for me. I'll need to grab a good FCP reference book for future use, I'm really enjoying this new path I'm on with FCP!by rdedits - Café LA |
