Did he ever do a computer back up? Ever have an asst. working on it? Did he even make a QT of what he had when he was done?by TimMirk - Café LA Re: Freelance - Client Producers / editors.... WRONG For Creativity (rant) - 12 years agoNot sad at all. Just the reality of being an editor. I know we love to throw around the term "button pushers" when we are frustrated, but the reality is we are almost always more than that. I never said we don't bring something creative to the table. We have more influence on the finished product than anyone else in the process. At the end of the day though, we are really just proby TimMirk - Café LA Re: Freelance - Client Producers / editors.... WRONG For Creativity (rant) - 12 years agoIf you want full creative control, being an editor is not the right profession. While we feel we "create", really our job is to provide. They aren't paying you to change their minds, they are paying you to bring their vision. So in that sense they ARE always right.by TimMirk - Café LA Re: WWDC: New version of Final Cut Pro.... they said Pro and not X.. hmm. - 12 years agoAnd no iMac upgrades.... well, at least Maps got turn by turn GPS with real time traffic.by TimMirk - Café LA Re: WWDC: New version of Final Cut Pro.... they said Pro and not X.. hmm. - 12 years agoAlso noticed it appears as if a 17" MBP isn't in the cards... at least for today.by TimMirk - Café LA Re: Mac Pro or what? - 12 years agoBased on current offerings its going to be the iMac and MBP. Thunderbolt makes it all possible- especially with new expansion boxes coming to drop in legacy type cards. I'm hoping they would add 1 or 2 more thunderbolt ports here soon, as many devices are end of chain at this point. For an editor that dabbles some in avid, fcp, premiere, after effects, motion, color, resolve- it does a lot of thby TimMirk - Café LA Re: Using 27" iMacs to replace Desktop Workstations - 12 years agoI just did the same thing for 2 systems. Granted not doing a ton of heavy lifting and rendering, but needed 2 pretty good at everything systems. Main focus will be running FCP 7/Avid MC6 with its own local storage. It also needs to be able to do Color/AfterEffects/Photoshop/Resolve etc. as well, although not daily. While they may not have the grunt of a 12 core, even just the base i5 quad core aby TimMirk - Café LA Random OT: Using 27" iMac in target display mode- hard drive chain question - 12 years agoOkay, so here is what I am attempting to do. New 17" i7 MBP as my main edit station. I would like to add a 27" iMac to use as a 2nd monitor in target display which I know I can do. I would like to use the 27" iMac as my secondary transcoding station. I would like to use Thunderbolt drives on both systems. So the idea is 17" MBP > Lacie 2Big thunderbolby TimMirk - Café LA Re: First time Blu-Ray Burn using Compressor!! Epic FAIL!!! - 12 years agoI go the compressor to encore route with an lg external burner. There was a bit of a learning curve especially for bluray menus. Toast is simple though, I just couldn't get a disk to look as good. Probably user error.by TimMirk - Café LA Re: OT: joining the union - 12 years agoYep... union will know and be the only ones who can tell you if your days will work for qualification. That's the best answer. I have to imagine theres some houses in LA that are union for promo work, but guessing it's not very common.by TimMirk - Café LA Re: Mac Pros? Something happening? - 13 years agoBasically I see them having 1 expandable slot that can be used for an additional video card, capture card, fibre card, whatever etc. etc. however they'll limit it to one possibly 2. Remember when we complained when they went from 4 to 3? Apple always strips away features for "simplicity." I do see the expansion chassis via thunderbolt (or PCIe if they add an additional slot) beingby TimMirk - Café LA Re: Mac Pros? Something happening? - 13 years agoI fully expect it to be a much smaller box, probably about the size of a 4 bay external enclosure. Or about 6 Mac Minis stacked up only longer. Thunderbolt if they truly believe in it will be where all the expansion is going to be at. I think we will see less choices in terms of processor options for this box, but they will be powerful and expensive. I think a low end MacPro will not exist to pby TimMirk - Café LA Re: Just built new system - Having major problems. Please help! - 13 years agoI would start with the Ram.... I've had more gremlins solved by different ram configs that just about any other solution on new systems. Personally, and I dont know why, but I have always been a multiple of 4gb guy for ram. I seem to remember having lots of trouble running 14gb on an octo, and 10gb on an quad at one point. I was good with 8 and 12 though on both systems. I hated staring at thby TimMirk - Café LA Re: OT: Despite new CPU options, Apple reportedly questioning future of Mac Pro - 13 years agoAvid just announced MC6 BTW with IO support for nearly the full matrox line, AJA/BMD/MOTU this is a huge deal for Avid. Now there is really no good reason to start anything with FCP 7.by TimMirk - Café LA Re: OT: Despite new CPU options, Apple reportedly questioning future of Mac Pro - 13 years agoIt all depends on what sort of expansion chassis and the functionality thunderbolt gains. I for one wouldn't be sad to see it go. I see a 27" iMac quad core i7, along with a thunderbolt 27" thunder bolt display, along with a matrox mxo2 mini with thunderbolt, as a pretty sweet "almost do it all" rig for me for under 6k. Or replace the iMac with a MBP, and same deal, only portby TimMirk - Café LA Re: Exporting FCP project in to Avid - 13 years agoCan Premiere Pro in CS5.5 do it?by TimMirk - Café LA Re: Audio with dslr cameras - 13 years agoPlural Eyes helped me sync an entire 5D show. I'd say it got about 85% spot on. The others were either MOS, or the in camera audio gain was too high and distorted there was nothing it could match too or the slate was too far away from the camera. It wasn't exactly fast, but I was also using "try really hard" and "level audio" because in camera was horrendously loud---- those oby TimMirk - Café LA Re: What to do.... - 13 years agoIf it were me I'd just tell him. I'd also offer to redo the title for an hour of pay if his buddy can't pull it off. For me it's not worth possibly ruining a relationship over. Unless of course the guy paid you thousands and thousands of dollars the first go around, and is paying thousands this time around. I'm guessing it is the relationship that is more important than the couple hundred buckby TimMirk - Café LA Re: FCPX on latest entry level MBP - 13 years agoWow Dom, you waited a whole 12 hours from your initial post to bash why people aren't responding to you on a Sunday on software released 5 days ago? Sheesh is right.by TimMirk - Café LA - X Re: OPPORTUNITY - WHO THE PRO'S ARE!!!! - 13 years agoNot sure what your definition of "Pro" is? Regardless, Even a "PRO" should see some of the good that FCPX might be able to bring to the table down the line. Sure not in this release, and it's definitely not ready for primetime, but there is some groundwork being laid that may pay off in a couple of years. In my few hours of playing, there is definitely some interesting woby TimMirk - Café LA - X Re: Difficulties with Technicolor Preset, Grinder, Proxy files - 13 years agoBut why are you using color corrected clips to begin with? Why can you not edit, and then apply to the final version?by TimMirk - Café LA Re: New iMac with 2 Thunderbolt ports = Death of MacPro? - 13 years agoThis is a huge deal. Matrox MXO line and Blackmagic already have thunderbolt support.... so yes, this could take a big chunk out of the Mac Pro line, even for "pros". I wouldn't be surprised to see AJA start to follow the Matrox lead on thunderbolt support either. Also let's not forget the possibility of expansion chassis for PCI-E. Sonnet has already announced them. Possibility ofby TimMirk - Café LA Re: Strange codec error message - 13 years agoWhy not export a movie without the file in one chunk, then reimport and stick it on top of that? I've never been fond personally of doing text or logos or even my widescreen mattes/crops etc on top of my real sequences for exactly this reason. There always tends to be something going on with it. I know it's an extra step, but it should only cost maybe an extra 20 or so minutes tops in render/by TimMirk - Café LA Re: Internal Raid 0 - What rate can I expect? - 13 years agoI use to get somewhere around 135-145 on both read/write on a 3 drive Raid 0 via disk utility. This was with 3 750gb 7200 Seagate Barracuda drives. When they were empty I seem to remember getting about 160 on the read, but write speeds stayed pretty consistent.by TimMirk - Café LA Digital Heaven's Loader may be the best add on ever! - 13 years agoI am continually amazed at how much a time saver it really is. I use to create folders on the media drives by day for all the SFX/MX I would import. It was like 5 steps. Create folder for the day. Find SFX in iTunes. Reveal file. Copy file. Drag to import. Now it's all one easy find, drag from iTunes directly into loader, and boom in the project. It is all in one simple place which keeps it easyby TimMirk - Café LA Re: Any way to easily batch copy file name to "log note" or any other column? - 13 years agoYea, the batch list thing works, but is always scary. On this one, I have no other info that is in the meta data anyways. The recconect works, of course mentioning reels won't match. Considering I have no reel info that's expected. So basically I bring in my clips, batch list out, edit in excel, bath list back in, reconnect. Clumsy but works.by TimMirk - Café LA Any way to easily batch copy file name to "log note" or any other column? - 13 years agoWant to rename my clips, but need to keep original file name info. Is there any way to batch copy the name column to any other column?by TimMirk - Café LA I love when QMaster works - 14 years agoWhen it works correctly it is great. Nothing better than a files that would take 3 hours to transcode takes under 40 with multiple cores. That is all.by TimMirk - Café LA Re: FCP and Avid question. - 14 years agoNot quite sure what the point of this thread is..... but I'll join in with some of my own thoughts. The absolute biggest reason you don't see these big budget movies cut with FCP is the talent. Who are the people cutting these bigger budget types of movies? The people cutting these movies likely were around when film transitioned to non linear, or at the very least got in at that transition wby TimMirk - Café LA Re: FCP 6.0.3 losing saved project file - 14 years agoYea, it was weird. Really really weird. Obviously, a day had gone by until the crash, but I couldn't really place any specific thing I had done around that time that would have caused the corruptions . Project that was corrupt wasn't very large- under 25mb from what I remember. It was all NTSC/DV material video wise. I had a bunch of audio tracks and music. All of my other open projects throughoby TimMirk - Café LA |
