No complaints. I have something north of 20 terabytes of mixed formats that I was hoping I could encode with the ProRes codec to create a common format. The white paper doesn't go into any detail on how to actually use it and there's a conspicuous absence of information about it in the manual. Its as though this codec fell of the truck at NAby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: Dell monitors & FCP - 16 years agoI have the 2405 and the 3007WFP, they both work great.by Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: Training resources for the FCP2Suite - 16 years agoThanks Mike for the info. I downloaded the Ripple Training, although it is well done it wasn't as informative as I was hoping for. If your thinking about upgrading this is a good resource to get a little more in depth information. I was looking for more information about using the ProRes codec. I don't know if its me but I'm having a difficult time finding useful information about how toby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: Report on first experiences using SmoothCam in FCP6 - 16 years agoCan't you convert subclips to master clips?by Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Training resources for the FCP2Suite - 16 years agoAny good resources for training on the new suite?by Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: OT : interesting technology, FCP 7 or 8? - 16 years agoGood find. Apple screws Australia again....sad smiley " I'm an Australian living in California, I haven't checked out the competition but if the prize is an iMac I'm not interested, however, if you'd like to enter this competition for a chance to win I'd be happy to submit it for you.by Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: HDV Cameras - 17 years agoWhy is it that anytime HDV is in the title of a thread people come out of the woodwork to carp on it. Actually, I do get it really, many of you don't like HDV, then DON'T use it. But please stop trying to talk anyone else out of researching it. I hate to put it this way but the debate is over, there is currently only ONE HD camcorder, the HVX200 that is NOT HDV, every other pro-sumer cHD aby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: HDV Cameras - 17 years agoNot the end of discussion. I have an HVX200 and am getting the A1, I post produce both HDV and DVCProHD with a digital intermediate codec and you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference.by Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: ProRes 422? - 17 years agoNo, if you want to edit compressed you can use Sheer Video or Cineform on both platforms. The only draw back is you'll have to render any effects or transitions, which I might add that on a Mac Pro isn't that bad. I use "option P" quite often and it appears that it often plays back faster than real time, which isn't really what you want either.by Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: Final Cut Studio 2 questions - 17 years agoThanks for the reply to my question about the log and transfer window. I guess I wasn't clear, I don't want to edit HDV natively, rather I'd like to encode the HDV to ProRes while capturing . Is that possible? ~chuckby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: ProRes 422? - 17 years agoRobert I would like to hear more about your experience with the Sheer Video Codec. Apple is an odd company but the idea that one company will provide the entire post solution is a bit naive, and from their actions, this is the concussion that I have reached. They won't enable RT for third party codec developers and won't allow other application developers to use the ProRes codec. I guesby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: Mac Pro video card upgrade? - 17 years agoJust in case it makes a difference to you, the ATI Radeon X1900 has 512MB VRAM.by Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: Final Cut Studio 2 questions - 17 years agoHi Paul, regarding using the ProRes 422 for HDV, can I encode HDV via firewire using the new log and transfer inteface directly into the ProRes codec? Or do I have to capture HDV and then encode to the ProRes codec? And if I have to do it that way can I at least use the log and capture interface to automate the process?by Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: ProRes 422? - 17 years agoAlso, the point of this thread, which I was trying to get back to was the significance of the ProRes codec, not the virtues of HDV or DVCProHD. The use of HQ intermediate ProRes (4:2:2) , Sheer Video (4:4:4) and Cineform (4:4:4) codecs greatly expands the usability of both HDV and DVCProHD. And if you want to look at the technical side, DVCProHD is 1280x1080 8bits with a fixed bit rate DCTby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: ProRes 422? - 17 years agoRegarding the RAID itself, there's a couple of things to consider, security of the data , capacity and performance. Using two SATA drives in a RAID0 you could expect to get 3 or 4 streams with the ProRes codec. There's no real backup or security here, if you loose a drive you'll have to re-capture. I genereally use RAID0 for shorter projects or where re-capturing footage would be easy and stby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: EditShare and FCP - 17 years agoThere are a lot of variables, what is the source footage, what do you need to deliver etc., that help you decide which codec to use. Most of the codecs you mentioned are generally developed by camera manufacturers, its the standard they use to put video to tape. The NLEs conformed to the same standard to be able to edit it. So if your shooting DVCPro50 use the corresponding codec. Howeverby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: ProRes 422? - 17 years agoMaybe we're getting to the meat of the discussion. HDV and DVCProHD are acquisition formats, they are both crap and both good for different reasons. Most people on this forum have expressed a real dislike for HDV in favor of DVCProHD. I continue to argue that it shouldn't matter, you should be able to convert any acquisition format to a higher level codec that is better suited for post-prby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: ProRes 422? - 17 years agoIts interesting to hear people refer to the DVCProHD codec as an OFF-LINE solution. I have been carping on the poor quality of DVCProHD and getting slammed for it. I guess in part because most of the people using it were using it as an ON-LINE solution and they didn't want the dirty little secret out. Well I have not seen this codec in person yet, but have talked to a few friends who knowby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: If Anyone Cares! 2 - 17 years agoThere's a lot more to how well FCP handles media management than what appears in the "media manager" dialog box and it appears that they are moving in the right direction. Again, I'm not going to labor the point too much since I have not used it or even seen a demo. But the little I've seen and read about the improved capture window, the ProRes codec the open format timeline etc..by Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: If Anyone Cares! 2 - 17 years agoHave you used the new release? I don't have any complaints either, but demo's at a tradeshow don't really account for much one way or the other. I edit with Avid, FCP and PPro, there are things I like and dislike about each but I'm not sure saying one is easier to use than the other is entirely accurate. I use both an really like both, however I prefer using the other creative suite tools, AE7, Illustrator, Photoshop and Encore are incredibly well integrated. That integration goes well beyond dynamic link. There are also a ton of third party tools that greatly increases the value of the Adobe suite. The thinby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: where to buy in LA - 17 years agoI got good and good price from Mac Hollywood. After checking prices at the Apple Store and other stores it was apparent that they were all priced pretty much the same. There are significant price differences for peripherals between Apple On-line and every one else but when I asked about up-grading with after marekt products the fine folks at the Apple store told me it would voind the warrantyby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: Working with Mutiple formats in one timeline - 17 years agoA couple things to consider, who's broadcasting it? Most broadcaster have specs that will tell you what they will accept. For example Discovery Communications will not accept HDV. I'm not suggesting that is the case here, but the broadcaster might be sensitive to how much SD you up-convert to edit in HDV and then back down to SD. Unless the quality of the SD footage is great and the total amoby Chuck Spaulding - Café LA Re: QT upgrade - 17 years agoThat sucks.
