EWby Ewoo - Café LA 24P DV to Digibeta... - 16 years agoI have 24p advanced DV footage, edited in a 23.98 sequence in FCP. I have a Kona 3 card and digibeta deck. I want to make a digibeta copy. What settings in FCP and on my KONA card should I use? Should I put the 23.98p DV clips into a 29.97 timeline? Should I do anything particular with my KONA settings? I have read that you can put 23.98p advanced clips 'natively' onto DV tapesby Ewoo - Café LA Re: assistant editor jobs? - 16 years agoDan....post an email address and I will send you some companies you could try if you are interested in companies that do TV - reality, History / Discovery channel etc style docs and lifestyle type shows (generally cable stuff). Thanks Ewooby Ewoo - Café LA DV 24p questions..... - 16 years agoI have a sequence with DV 24p Advanced footage in it. I need to make a digibeta master for a festival screening. Prior to this the sound will be mixed in Pro-Tools by a mixer / designer. I need to provide the mixer with an OMF and a quicktime of the movie with timecode burnt in. He will mix the sound and then provide AIFF files for me to sync back to the picture before output to digibby Ewoo - Café LA Re: How to convert 16:9 DV footage into Pro Res 422HD??? - 16 years agoHi Graeme, Another related question.... If we decide in the short term to do an SD output onto digibeta, only going through FCP (not Color), then what is the best workflow? So....I have 23.98p DV footage in a 23.98 DV sequence. I have a Kona 3 card and SDI out to digibeta. In order to get to a 4:4:4 color space in FCP do I need to put my footage into a 10 bit uncompressed sequence,by Ewoo - Color Re: DV 24p onto Digibeta? - 16 years agoThanks Koz, So, I'm sure that the project is in either normal or advanced - not true 24p. Given this, are there any setting on the Kona 3 that I should know about? Do I just set it to go from 29.97 to 29.97 and fcp will send out of my 23.98 sequence correctly? Or does the Kona need to do some sort of conversion?by Ewoo - Café LA DV 24p onto Digibeta? - 16 years agoI have a project that was shot and edited as 24p DV. I need to make a Digibeta master. As digibeta does not to 23.98 or progressive - only 29.97 and interlaced, I was wondering if there is anything I need to do to make this process work. I have access to a system with a KONA 3 card and SDI out to the Digibeta deck. I believe the project was shot in 24p advanced, although it's possible that itby Ewoo - Café LA New site with free Color grades to download.... - 16 years agoHi all, I just came across this site with some free grades for Color. It also has a forum. It looks pretty new and is a bit sparse at the moment.....but if it takes off it could be a useful resourse. Ewooby Ewoo - Café LA Becoming an OSX expert..... - 16 years agoHi..... I would describe myself as an advanced FCP user and know quite a lot about video and color. However my understanding of and expertise with OSX issues including maintenance, how all the parts of my system interact, networking etc is very patchy. I usually work out how to get stuff done.....with a mixture of trial and error, google searches and forum postings........but I would like tby Ewoo - Café LA Re: HD monitor options? - 16 years agoHi guys, Do you think the LCD technology is good enough NOW? I'm talking in terms of the JVC monitor - not a super high end / expensive one.... Ewooby Ewoo - Café LA Re: HD monitor options? - 16 years agoHi Shane, So in your opinion is a second hand PVM (presuming in decent condition) a better option than the JVC for Color correction? Ewooby Ewoo - Café LA Re: HD monitor options? - 16 years agoThanks Shane, I'll check out the JVC for myself.... The other alternative I'm looking at is getting a second hand SONY PVM20L5, which has the option of a card for HD. Do you know about this setup and if it is better or worse than the JVC for viewing and color correcting HD output? Ewooby Ewoo - Café LA HD monitor options? - 16 years agoI am looking to set up a FCP / Color suite with as good an HD video monitor as I can afford.....I will be doing some shows for television broadcast, so will need something reasonable for color correction. Just wondering what monitors people recommend for this purpose - basically looking for the cheapest acceptable option. Thanks in advance Ewooby Ewoo - Café LA Re: On monitoring..... - 16 years agoThanks.....it would be great to know..... If it's not possible, what is the least expensive option people would recommend for monitoring HD output from Color? Ewooby Ewoo - Color Re: How to convert 16:9 DV footage into Pro Res 422HD??? - 16 years agoThanks for all this info Graeme..... Very helpful and now I feel I have a workflow that should give me decent results..... Thanks Ewooby Ewoo - Color On monitoring..... - 16 years agoIs it possible / ok to monitor HD output with "Color" on a standard def broadcast CRT monitor - I presume that the Kona will do the downconvert and letterbox the image ok. However will it be acceptable to Color correct with this setup - will the Colors I see on my standard def monitor reflect the Colors available in HD? Obviously the resolution will not be as sharp - but this might bby Ewoo - Color Re: How to convert 16:9 DV footage into Pro Res 422HD??? - 16 years agoHi Graeme, Thanks.....now I understand! Also....it makes the workflow very, very easy.....I don't have to do an extra render or anything..... By the way....can you explain what your filters do to improve the conversion? Also....does Color use the same engine that Compressor uses to do the conversion, or does it do it it's own way? If I am using a Kona card, will it be using the Kona tby Ewoo - Color Re: How to convert 16:9 DV footage into Pro Res 422HD??? - 16 years agoHi Graeme, So....I'm certainly still learning about how all this works.....and there is an issue that isn't clear to me..... With this workflow, will I be doing my actual color corrections in the 4:2:2 color space, or will that color space only be created on output, after my corrections have been made? If I would be working in 4:1:1, would I expect my final product to look different thaby Ewoo - Color Re: How to convert 16:9 DV footage into Pro Res 422HD??? - 16 years agoWhat you said makes sense to me..... However my understanding is that even though the original DV footage is in 4:1:1, there will be some advantage to doing the Color correction in 4:2:2 - there will be a greater range of potential colors to work with and less sampling. That said, I have not seen what the practical advantages are, and am hoping someone here can tell me if it's worth it - wiby Ewoo - Color Re: How to convert 16:9 DV footage into Pro Res 422HD??? - 16 years agoSo, while I am working in Color, will I be working in a 4:2:2 Color space in this workflow? Ewooby Ewoo - Color Re: How to convert 16:9 DV footage into Pro Res 422HD??? - 16 years agoHi Graeme, But when do I convert the footage to Pro Res - I presume before I take it into Color? What is the workflow for using your filters? I will have a film that was shot on DV and has been edited on DV. For this final stage I want to take it "up" to Pro-Res and want to know the best way to do it. Any help greatly appreciated, Ewooby Ewoo - Color How to convert 16:9 DV footage into Pro Res 422HD??? - 16 years agoI am going to be working on a DV 24p Advanced feature. It was shot in 16:9 (not sure if anamorphic or letterbox yet). I will be doing the color correction with Color. I would like to work in the Pro Res 422 Color space, and probably finish on HDCAM tape. What is the best way to convert my DV media? Can I make a quicktime of the whole movie in DV, then take it into compressor to converby Ewoo - Color Re: FCP Editors get paid less than AVID editors for the same work..... - 16 years agoAgain Michael, It would be rare that the example is clear cut like this - most companies would not be so openly unfair to their editors to treat them this way OVERTLY (although Shane says he has been treated to this). Rather, companies choose FCP instead of AVID and then expect to pay less than they would if they were using AVID. Regardless, I guess if we can trust Shane Ross, a moderatorby Ewoo - Café LA Re: FCP Editors get paid less than AVID editors for the same work..... - 16 years agoI agree 100% Shane..... Which is why it doesn't make sense to pay less for editors working on FCP that editors working on AVID..... But at least in cable TV, that is what seems to be happening in many or most cases..... Ewooby Ewoo - Café LA Re: FCP Editors get paid less than AVID editors for the same work..... - 16 years agoThe scenario you described is very unlikely to happen of course..... But that does not mean there isn't a disparity...... The way it happens is this: a company decides to use FCP instead of AVID - usually because it is cheaper (which can be a good reason, if the system also does what they need it to do). When they decide to use FCP they also look for editors more experienced with FCP - andby Ewoo - Café LA Re: FCP Editors get paid less than AVID editors for the same work..... - 16 years agoMike Horton wrote: "Hard to prove it unless lots of folks come forward with their stories.
